WDFN nights

Post by SolarMax » Sun Apr 21, 2019 11:40 pm

On an AM Radio group on Facebook, someone in western Massachusetts yesterday (4/20) reported hearing nighttime interference from WDFN to Bloomberg's NYC WBBR 1130, usually solid at his location. Much like listeners in metro Detroit, he had never heard WDFN before, much less at night, Someone forget to flip the night switch, or are they tweaking?

WCAR's 50000 Watt 1130 Day facility was authorized before Critical Hours restrictions and is grandfathered, and radiates roughly the Day pattern IDF equivalent of 50000 watts in that direction. Remember though that WDFN is permitted to stay on Day facilities, probably 45 minutes after Local Sunset in Massachusetts. So it is pretty much Night in Western MA when WDFN is required to reduce to 10000 watts with 9 towers protecting WBBR, KWKH Class As, and WISN, KFAN and others Class Bs.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Did you mean New York City?
There are no stations on 1130 in Massachusetts.

The person was hearing the interference in Western, MA. Someone on Frank Berry's board also posted about interference from "The Giant 1130" to WBBR in Poughkeepsie, NY a while back. I was considering that it could be Night at the RL about 45 minutes earlier than at WDFN Sunset the way the FCC calculates Sunrise and Sunset times. So the guy looked out his window in MA, saw it was dark, and assumed that WDFN hadn't changed pattern and power.

I hear interference from 1600 in NYC bothering WAAM in the early mornings, they have a 15,000 watt daytime power, station there on 1600 !

WWRL 1600 has been a perennial DX log in SE Michigan, off the back lobe of the four tower parallelogram, I think a rectangular arrangement. Kevin Sanderson told me that he would frequently hear WAAM on the off air monitor when they signed off the air back in the late 1970s, out at the "Lake Sinclair" site off Merritt and Platt Rd., next to US 23. Good AM sites do tend to be mucky. Also, I heard WADO 1280, back in the 5 kW Night shallow null era. I do hear WBBR 1130 quite a bit on nondirectional Day Pattern, by nulling out WDFN.
