Most distant AM/FM/TV signal you ever tuned in?

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Most distant AM/FM/TV signal you ever tuned in?

Post by mtburb » Wed Mar 27, 2019 10:05 pm

Another pre-crash thread recreation. As in the old thread, list the most distant AM, FM and TV signal you've ever tuned in.

From my current memory, all from my current house in Wyandotte using respective indoor receivers for each medium:
AM: probably one of the east coast clear-channel stations.
FM: WENZ 107.9 Cleveland, spring and summer of 2018.
TV: KDKA 2 Pittsburgh, three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd).

My furthest DTV tropo: KDKA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 202 miles for three days in January 2017 and a night in September 2017 with only an Antennas Direct C2V!

Current setup: Antennas Direct C2Max (2018-present)

WNOB 107.9, now WENZ, was my very FIRST true DX log on FM. But nowhere near the furthest.

Growing up in Central Genesee County, there were few local FMs at the time, but a lot from Detroit Birmingham Dearborn Windsor, Lansing East Lansing, and Saginaw Bay City Midland, and other towns in between, Lapeer, Owosso, and Ann Arbor. Sometime around 1964 or 1965, there was a storm, and one of the WAMM towers collapsed, the one with the Four WGMZ 107.9 Bays mounted on it. Both stations were owned by the Midstates FM Network. We had the FM turnstile antenna on the TV antenna tower, and a Magnavox Stereo Theater, though without the Stereo FM tuner. I tuned in 107.9 and there was a very weak signal. It turned out to be WNOB, 70000 watts ERP from the Far Eastern part of Cleveland. They said they were Cleveland's most powerful FM station. Seems like WDBN 94.9, the Medina, OH station, was more powerful, but outside the Cleveland Metro Area.

PJB 800 in Netherlands Antilles is probably the furthest AM. TV, there were many Sporadic E DX stations, mainly in the 1000-1200 mile range. There were some Mexican FMs and TVs, but I couldn't ID them.

I also picked up KFI , from Detroit, with a '56 Ford Auto radio in the house with a 5 ft piece of wire as the antenna. ;
This was in 1965.
On the road , I had a GE superradio on a golf course at night on the Big Island and could hear stations from the west cost of US and Canada and American Samoa and Australia. And LOTS of other unidentified stations speaking Oriental languages.
Best F M Was WMBI in Chicago, from suburbs of Detroit. I had a 4element FM Yagi antenna up.

I can’t seem to ever receive anything but static on 640, and I consider myself pretty well trained to listen for signals under the static. I feel like KFI is the gold standard for DXing in Metro Detroit. Once I can receive that, I’ll achieve my goal.

So my (rhetorical) question is, what am I doing wrong? Why can’t I get KFI? I’ve received 17 watt stations from Tennessee from Livonia on the transoceanics, but KFI still escapes me.

In recent years - most distant FM station was 93.9 WMIA-FM from Miami Beach, FL. Heard it near Brighton and again near Grand Ledge while driving along I-96.

In the late 90's, I received a few FM stations from western Texas on a stereo boombox at my childhood home near Grand Rapids.

Most distant AM stations:
- 850 KOA from Denver
- 1200 WOAI from San Antonio
- stations transmitting at 600 kc, 670 kc, and 1610 kc from Cuba, I believe.

I'm in Florida right now and don't have my log books with me. But my best verified AM is KFI, Los Angeles.

My most distant verified FM was from Lubbock Texas.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

I’ve received KOA 850 and a station on 710 from Cuba from Livonia. I also received a 1kW WTIR 1680 from Winter Garden, FL in Plymouth at night.

In my youth, I QSL'd quite a few AM stations. I think an AM station in Des Moines or New Orleans was the furthest.

But the furthest may of been WJR.
We drove to the Rocky Mountains probably 30 years ago. On the way back, as soon as we started coming down into Boulder, WJR came in loud and clear.

On AM it was 1150 CKOC from Hamilton, ON received in Fort McMurray, AB

On FM I heard 99.1 KDZR / Z Rock from Denton, Texas in 1993 (E-Skip). I received that one near Brantford, ON.
The Toronto 99.1 FM signal was not active back then.

On VHF TV I've seen E-Skip from Wyoming and Texas in the 1990's. On UHF I saw FOX 53 Pittsburgh in my first apartment back in 2003.
