January 19-20, 2017 Tropo

Post by cckadlec » Fri Jan 20, 2017 9:14 am

A summary of the big tropo last night from here in Fremont. Most locals were either gone or struggling and it was simple to pull in distant stations on 92.5 and 105.3 with my radio just 11 miles from the tower of both locals in Grant. The log doesn't contain all stations heard; only the more notable stations were logged. It's the first Charleston opening logged since 1998 and first time hearing Maryland by tropo.

That's a pretty nice list! Most of those I didn't get with a fancy HD Tuner and outdoor rotated antenna!

I went down to my car 35 feet below my spot I listen to the Grundig and the situation was drastically different. A few stations (93.1 WZAK, 94.7 Detroit, 99.5 WGAR, etc.) but very little else to note. It really is about location and height. The stations started in WV when I first tuned in but didn't last long there - I probably missed the best stuff - and stretched into Maryland before petering out. Actually, I was petered out, so it thankfully petered out soon after too. Nothing like going to bed and waking up to people reporting 800-mile tropo or something that began 10 minutes after you went to sleep. But I was ill-prepared for something like this and had no idea where my recorder even was. I haven't DXed here in months. No reason to!!! I think the last real sessions I had were in August and September with the coastal bandscans I posted (in this same forum category). But if it's gonna stretch out like this, it's worth it!

I was in Grand Rapids and I did get some impressive stations, including the following:
90.7 WAUS Berrien Springs (mixing with CSN's 90.7 translator)
94.7 WFBQ Indianapolis, IN
94.9 WMMQ East Lansing (was GR94.9 off the air on Thursday?)
95.1 WAJI Fort Wayne, IN
97.1 WLHK Shelbyville, IN
98.3 WCXT Hartford (all over the 98.3 Holy Family translator)
98.9 religious (likely WVCX Tomah, WI)
99.5 WZPL Greenfield, IN
99.9 WQQO Benton Harbor (no sign of Smile FM translator at times)
101.1 WKQX Chicago, IL
101.5 WNSN South Bend, IN (through WBFX I-BLOC)
101.9 WDEZ Wausau, WI
102.1 WIMT Lima, OH (walking all over WMUK Thursday afternoon at 44th and Eastern)
102.7 WRVM Suring, WI
103.7 WCSY South Haven (over the Spanish LPFM)
106.9 top 40 music mixing with WOOD-FM over by the airport (likely WXXC Marion, IN)
107.1 WIRX St. Joseph

This was all Thursday afternoon. I was busy Thursday evening (at a GVSU basketball game and then driving home to Manistee, where there wasn't as much tropo). However, I did get Magic 97 from Escanaba in Allendale just before heading home.

Yep, also hear quite strong Michiana tropo that afternoon as well as 96.5 Lafayette and 102.5 New Castle, but both are regular lake tropo stations, so I didn't bother to even make mention of them as I don't consider them special. Lost interest til West Virginia started coming in later on.

Meanwhile, on TV, it wasn't better than the one last Sunday, but I did finally get video/audio on WRLM Canton, Ohio after only decoding the PSIP before, plus KDKA Pittsburgh came in again, but only for two seconds twice. Obviously the Cleveland stations WEWS and nearly WKYC came in once again but at this point they're regular lake tropo stations for me anyway.

My furthest DTV tropo: KDKA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 202 miles for three days in January 2017 and a night in September 2017 with only an Antennas Direct C2V!

Current setup: Antennas Direct C2Max (2018-present)
