WNIC HD 2 Gone

Post by Rich S » Thu Sep 01, 2022 11:43 am

Pretty sure WNIC HD2 is off the air and gone. IHeart App still has the feed. Noticed down since last week. Not a coincidence likely as WRVF HD 3 reportedly dropped on 8/25. Liked the format on WNIC HD2. Signal was around for at least 10 years. Probably a sign that more of the HD feeds will be going away. Bummer.

Still playing station ID on the app. Not sure if that means could just be down? Still guessing gone.

I hope it's not gone forever. It was practically the only "FM" station I regularly listened to in the car. When I got my car in 2018, I had HD stations programmed for 104.3 HD2 "Oldies 104.3", 94.7 HD2 "Oldies", 95.5 HD2 "Classic Funk", 97.9 HD2 "Funkytown", and 100.3 HD2 "Sunny Radio". That whittled down to about 2 for a while.

Detroit's commercial FM scene bores me to tears, so now, if WNIC HD2 stays off, that leaves WOMC HD2, which might not be enough to keep me from simply streaming from my phone all the time, or leave it on AM 580 all the time. I hope WNIC HD2 comes back.

Frankly I'm surprised Sunny lasted on 100.3 HD2 as long as it did, especially after iHeart debuted its corporate Breeze format (recently dropped from 101.5 HD3 in Toledo, also heard on 107.7 in Mansfield, OH). But I'll not be a happy camper if it is indeed gone for good. That would leave V98.7 HD2 as the only HD side channel in Detroit worthy of my listening time (I'm not impressed with 104.3 HD2 when I'm able to hear CKWW and Toronto's AM 740 as better choices for Oldies). Otherwise for my Soft AC/Oldies fix I guess I'll continue to stream America's Best Music on WMST, WTLO, KWDP, etc.

What are the formats of the HD2+ stations? Is there a list out there?

They/them, non-binary and proud.

The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

hdradio.com has a generalized yet unhelpful/outdated list for your area.

I've been reading that most of the Sunny / Breeze HD2 or HD3 streams across iHM's terrestrial stations were dumped months ago. 100.3 HD-2 held on longer than nearly all the others.

In fact, the only iHM station in Metro Detroit with active HD-2 or HD-3 channels at the moment is WKQI, and both of those side channels are doing nothing more than rebroadcasting Channel 9-5-5.

I stopped having any use whatsoever for any of the iHM HD-2 & HD-3 streams the moment they removed "Smells Like the 90's" from 106.7 HD-2, and that happened three full years ago!

Just listened again today on IHeart app..still has jingles for WNIC HD2. Still no word back from WNIC but safe to say it’s gone from the FM dial. Not sure purpose of HD radio anymore.

Its main purpose is to feed FM translators and to transmit data services, I would say.

HD-2 services were a sorry excuse for new radio services. I don't even think it sounds as good as analog FM. Just like audio purists prefer vinyl records to CDs and other digital formats. There are always artifacts.

I agree that the audio quality stinks, in most instances.

I'm in Grand Rapids at the moment and 93.7, 101.3, 104.5 and 105.7 have also dropped their HD2s. I'm going to miss the Smooth Jazz on 105.7 HD2. Only 96.1 HD2 (a simulcast of WTKG 1230) and 106.9 HD2 (a simulcast of WKBZ 1090) remain.
No side channels on WGVU anymore either (yes, Real Oldies is gone but they used to have an all-jazz HD3). The only side channel remaining as a music format is 95.7 HD2, which is Smile FM.
