Re: Global Sarnia-Oil Springs
I believe CFPL was carried on cable in parts of the Thumb. I don’t think it is now. The TVO Windsor repeater was on cable in some Metro systems. It may still be in isolated spots. I don’t believe CBEFT was on any Michigan system at any point. Same goes for CHWI and CHCH (the latter does, or did, ma...

Re: Global Sarnia-Oil Springs
Global was not carried in the Free Press TV listings in the '80s, although CKCO 42 was. IIRC, it had a similar footprint in Michigan both OTA and cable. CHBX 2 (still in analog) has never been on cable in the Michigan Sault (although it was at one time carried in Newberry and Rogers City). CJIC 5 (C...

Re: Global Sarnia-Oil Springs
I remember watching the Care Bears on Saturday morning in the late '80s on channel 29 from my grandparents' house in Romeo. It came in quite well with their outdoor antenna. If it's gone, that's the end of local OTA TV in Sarnia/Port Huron, with CKCO 42 and the CBC/SRC Toronto repeaters long gone. I...

Re: 580 CKWW sold to owner of 102.3 CINA-FM
CKLW was a popular music station into the early '80s so it doesn't surprise me that the CKWW format has included some early '80s. During the first attempt at a "Big 8" style oldies revival on 93.9 in the late '80s, they played Whitney Houston. As for WPON, I have heard them play songs as recent as "...

Re: Now, this is weird! (involves 91.3 WGTE)
WGTE makes it to the Lansing area frequently during tropo, as does 103.7 WCKY. Not too hard since the closest nearby stations on the frequency are WCSG and flea-powered WOES.

Re: The History of UHF Television
Not sure about CBEFT, but there was a station (also French-language) in the Ottawa market in the '70s that lost its license for airing softcore adult films. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFVO-TV Meanwhile, CITY-TV in Toronto had the late-night "Baby Blue Movies" and faced an obscenity charge for it ...

Re: Tropospheric ducting on Saturday 2/3
Nothing new received in Whitmore Lake but it was still nice to have a tropo opening so early in the year. Some highlights: 88.5 Smile FM (WCTP) from the Thumb 90.3 WBLV Twin Lake 91.3 WCSG 94.1 WHST from the Thumb 95.7 WLHT 95.9 FM96 London 97.3 WMEE Fort Wayne 100.5 WSGW-FM 100.9 CBC Radio 1 Wingha...

Re: 1090am WCAR
With so many Beautiful Music stations in Detroit at that time and most of them being FM Stereo operations, how they thought a 250-watt AM station could compete with that is beyond me. WQTE had the advantage of being at a low dial position and getting into the format before the market was heavily FM ...

Re: 1090am WCAR
My great-aunt was an avid WTAK listener, except for Paul Winter who was a bit too liberal for her. (To illustrate how much better the station got out at that time: she lived in St. Clair Shores.) Winter, of course, was a former WXYZ radio personality and went on to be the voice of WTVS 56 for many y...

Re: La Nueva Playa 93.5 Detroit
Fifth format, I think. The first was K-Love, then Praise Network, then The Roar, then Podcast and now Playa. Unless I'm missing something. Salsa music is actually more popular in Mexico than many people realize. Its audience is primarily in the bigger cities, however, and I would assume most Spanish...

Melanie ("Brand New Key") dead at 76
Melanie Safka's biggest hits included the #1 "Brand New Key" from late 1971 and the Top 10 "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" (inspired by her experience at Woodstock) with the Edwin Hawkins Singers from 1970. She had recently been working on a new album. https://variety.com/2024/music/obituaries-peop...

Re: No Detroit CHR from 1994-98?
On the subject of slogans, I seem to recall that both WDRQ and WKQI used the slogan "Today's Best Music" simultaneously for a very short time circa 1997. That happened after DRQ dropped the "Detroit's Dance Music" tagline and added some Modern AC product to sound a little more like a mainstream CHR ...

Re: No Detroit CHR from 1994-98?
Technically, Detroit's period without a mainstream CHR station began at the end of 1992, when 99.5 The Fox disappeared in favor of Wow-FM (and later WYCD). WHYT reported as a mainstream CHR (as Radio & Records didn't have a Rhythmic panel yet), but they were straight up Rhythmic/Churban, not dissimi...

Re: Weather reporting
Reminds me of the comment sections on the 9/11 videos I watch. It's either: *anchor stays calm and says they don't want to assume anything* "Oh my GOD how did they not know it was terrorism!?!? I knew it right away! Ugh! Stupid media!" Or "Oh if this happened today the anchors would be beside thems...
