Re: Oldies music on 1620

I only hear it around the sun set hours between around 8:30 and 10 PM. Definitely a signal that is being received via sky wave, It is not a local signal at all.

Oldies music on 1620

While tuning the radio around sunset the past few weeks I've been hearing a station on 1620 playing 50's, 60's, 70's oldies. The signal fades in and out, so it is not a local signal. Been hearing it at both of my residences in Grand Rapids and Newaygo. There are no liners, voices, jingles, etc. just...

Re: Old school TV 8 promotional videos from 1984

Here is the story as I recall about Gary Bazner. He was not fired by channel 8. Skip Essick at WOOD radio wanted to hire Baz to take the place of the retiring Bruce Grant. Channel 8 told Skip the only way they would let him hire Baz away was if they could lure Craig James away from WZZM. They did lu...

Re: WFAT-AM 930

Scanning the band again this afternoon (when you're retired you can scan the band all you wish) I hear that 930 is back on the air with the Tiger game.

WFAT-AM 930

I've noticed the past several days that AM 930 WFAT/Battle Creek has not been on the air. I listen to them occasionally when I am on the south side of Grand Rapids. Anybody in the Kzoo/B.C. area know the reason why?????

Re: 1480 & 850 Shutting Down

I happened to be in the area of 68th/Kalamazoo this morning and notice that the 1480 towers are no longer standing. Must have happened within the last 6 weeks or so. I was out there in early April and the towers were still there. Dead end road going into the old site has a sign that says "temporaril...

Re: Tony Gates Pulled From WLAV

I had the pleasure of working with Sean Stevens in the 80's at WGRD. A true pro. For most of the 80's Sean was not on the air at GRD but was the off air production director. (remember when radio had positions like that?) I left GRD in the summer of 86 to go to WJFM and their failed AC experiment cal...

Re: Tony Gates Pulled From WLAV

I too had the pleasure? of working on WLAV-AM in the late 70's during their last hurrah as a Top 40/AC music station. I was hired in the spring of 1979 by Curt Kelly to work Sunday afternoons from Noon-6. He was replaced shortly thereafter by the aforementioned Jim Corcoran. During this time Regis M...

Bobby Rydell

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the passing of Bobby Rydell on April 5th. Bobby was one of the big stars of the early years of Rock and Roll. Bobby had 29 hot 100 hits, 19 of which made the top 40 and 6 top 10's. Songs like Wild One, Volare and Forget Him were some of his big hits. May he RIP.

Re: The 1968 Tigers - losing our heroes

Been a tiger fan since I was an 8 year old kid in 1960. Of course like all Tiger fans have a great appreciation for both the 1968 and the 1984 World Championship Teams. Roll the clock ahead 43 years to the year 2011. My 17 year old daughter is playing travel softball and have a weekend tournament in...

Re: GR Radio in 1967

I was 15 in 1967 and remember radio in Grand Rapids during this time period. Some great radio to listen to back in the day. Grand Rapids had 3 Top 40 stations in 1967. WERX/1530, WGRD/1410 and WLAV/1340. Plus the FM band was starting to come to life with 2 stations WJFM/93.7 and WZZM 95.7 starting t...

Re: Latest Jeopardy! Uber-Champion

Anybody who was watching Jeopardy last night on Channel 3 out of Kalamazoo, we knew that Amy lost the game, but we didn't find out what she wagered or what the final money totals were. It got cut off by a Channel 3 promo and into a commercial break. Great timing Channel 3.

Re: 1480 & 850 Shutting Down

Well......now that the shackles are off (no longer employed by Grand Valley) I can say what was really happening inside the operation and the reasons for the end of Real Oldies 1480 and 850. Most of the speculation I see on this board is totally inaccurate and some of it laughable. The reason for th...
