I check WWV and CHU on their several frequencies to see how propagation is, simply , by checking signal strength of the stations.

I do the same thing. It's a quick check of how the bands are.

I recall hearing WMPC in Otsego Lake, while watching the WGRY 1230 tower beacon flash.

WWCK-FM got out great in the rock era. And they had a wonderful bunch of jocks who KNEW the music. I remember driving all over this part of the state listening to Flint's Best Rock.
