Re: Big announcement at WVFN?

When the window opened a few years ago for AMs to request FM translators, WVFN had a permit for 102.3 and WJIM had one for 107.7. Somehow, the 102.3 frequency ended up in WKAR's hands, and the 107.7 permit disappeared when WJIM settled for the crappy 106.9 signal. My uneducated guesses: -An FM trans...

Re: 1480 & 850 Shutting Down

It was a sad day listening in, knowing the end was near. I can't help but wonder if the financial part could have been overcome if WGVU had simply laid out the situation and challenged listeners to step up. But, I suspect WGVU was ready to be done with the stations and cash in on the land. I did fin...

Re: WOAP Format Change

Flipping through the dial this morning and WOAP was airing the La Ponderosa Spanish format. Temporary glitch, or did the Portal lease expire 12/31?

Re: For all you rubes that thought an "independent" commission was needed

I understand the need to get rid of gerrymandering, but it seems the commission did that at the cost of combining areas that have very different needs. I live in Clinton County, and for the State House map, I now live in an area that includes the northern half of the City of Lansing. The urban needs...

Re: July Grand Rapids radio ratings

It seems quite apparent to me that Big 101.3 is pressuring the ratings of WFGR, WTRV and possibly WLAV. That station got off to a very slow start, and its money demo numbers probably underperform its 12+ numbers, but whatever changes they've made in the past six months seem to be working. I have no...

Re: WLNZ to Michigan Radio?

I've been a little curious as to why WKAR doesn't do more to head off Michigan Radio in the Lansing area. WUOM gets fairly decent ratings already in Lansing with their NPR talk programming. Meanwhile, the programming on 870/105.1 during the day is mostly filler BBC and niche shows. Why not try keepi...

Re: Darrin Rockcole

Tim Staudt announced on his radio show on Monday that Emily indeed is joining WILX as the chief meteorologist. Seeing how everything still seems pretty secretive about it, I wonder if he let the cat out of the bag sooner than he was supposed to.

Re: Easy 93.3

I haven't heard the programming yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's very similar to 1400 / 104.1 in the Bay City area. It reminds me a great deal of 1400/104.1. I haven't listened to those stations long enough to know how close the comparison would be, but it is definitely along those lines.

Easy 93.3

I noticed this morning that WXLA is now going by "Easy 93.3", playing "easy" music from the 1970s onward. A format adjustment of sorts of a decade or two forward from their previous format.

Re: Portest Coverage

I watched just the WOOD coverage last night, and was overall impressed with what they did. Major props to Leon. I started watching about 9:30 and made it until a little after 2, and he was on the whole time, solo, doing phone interviews and coordinating coverage with the field reporters. Justin Koll...

Re: How High Would A 250 Watt Translator Have Be To Equal A 3000 Watt Class A?

All or nearly all existing AM translators could be fit into a small expanded FM Band, if the FCC would ever do it. True, however an expanded band would require the purchase of a new radio, and that is something people are doing much less of. I think an expanded band at this point would relegate the...

Re: Multiple City IDs Past, More Recent, and Present

Back in the late 80's/early 90's, I recall WION in Ionia having a unique TOH ID. The ID would be the typical "WION Ionia", but would be followed by a name of a town in their listening area (Portland, Pewamo, Saranac, Westphalia, Belding etc). Each hour would feature a different "secondary" city. The...
