Re: Detroit rapper and comedian tries to cash in on UAW strike

Unions have their ups and downs, but pay is only one issue. Contracts cover many other aspects, such as benefits, vacation, personal time, breaks, safety, shift turnaround, grievance policy and other things outside the realm of monetary compensation. Granted, I haven't read enough on the current GM/...

Re: WFYC/Alma - Jon Heinlen

A friend of mine tells a funny story of his tenure at WFYC in the early 80's. The young lady who was training him for the night shift stepped outside for a smoke while he ran the board. He pulled a Beatles LP and cued up I Am the Walrus . She heard it on the speaker outside the building and rushed b...

Re: Most Dangerous Roundabouts In Michigan

Same here. The old MSU roundabouts seemed larger in diameter than most built today. There was a little more road space for at least moderate daily traffic (sporting events were another matter). The lights were a much-needed improvement, although much caution is still necessary as I've encountered ma...

Re: WFYC/Alma - Jon Heinlen

I may stand corrected. I thought at one point the station was still in the Sommerville family, but a quick check of the FCC records for WFYC and WQBX indicates the stations are currently owned by a company called Jacom. Not sure whether there is any affiliation with the Sommerville's at this point. ...

Re: Outa Here

The only Florida location I really want to visit is Key West. I hear it's a tourist trap, but it would be fun to experience just once.

Re: Most Dangerous Roundabouts In Michigan

The intersection of Hamilton & Marsh Roads in Okemos was converted from a light to a roundabout several years ago. Not a good thing to navigate during rush hour. The thing that confuses me most about roundabouts are the lane designations. In some cases the outer-lane is designated right-turn-only at...

Re: WFYC/Alma - Jon Heinlen

Jon interviewed and hired me for a weekend gig at WQTK/WCXK in St. Johns back in the summer of 1983. He was the assistant PD at the time. Helluva nice guy! I remember he was very easygoing and soft-spoken. He had worked for WILS previously, and was brought over by Rick D'Amico when he assumed the GM...

Re: How do you measure success?

My Pastor presented this scenario in a recent homily, and it was like a light bulb went on: Imagine you've won the lottery. The prize is $86,400 a day for life. The deposit is made to your bank account promptly at midnight. You have until the following midnight to spend the money. You can only withd...

Re: Go Home Flatlanders! I Don't Care About Your Shitty Money!

It isn't just a "Flatlander in Northern Michigan" problem. People are just ruder in general. Life has become busier and more hectic, and that breeds aggressiveness. People leave busy places to vacation in busy places among other tourists who do the same. Some of the best places we've vacationed are ...

Re: Plant Based Meat Substitute Products

I tried BK's Impossible Whopper just out of curiosity. Personally I thought it was pretty good. The only difference I could tell was the texture is a little lighter than its meat-based counterpart. Other than that I think they nailed the taste. I'd order it again, except next time with cheese (ain't...

Re: Listeners are abandoning local radio in droves in the Lansing market

Unlike when it first signed on, Duke's playlist maybe 12 to 18 months ago became more heavily centered on 90's era Country, and the ratings have responded favorably. I said at the start that the 90's should be the decade receiving greatest airplay. There's just something about that era. Country mus...

Re: You Thought Lead Was Bad? Now It's Fluoride!

Getting up in the morning poses a health risk. If I had to worry about every potential risk out there I probably wouldn't leave the house. Even then there's a chance I could slip in the shower and bust my skull open, or poison myself with a bad piece of cheese. Prioritizing risk is a key to life.

Re: Scam Alert

Called again and got through to a guy who spoke very poor English. Said I owe $299 for computer services. Told him I didn't ask for or receive any computer services. He said I did, two years ago. Said if I send the money it will be refunded to my bank account within four hours. I hung up. Calling t...

Re: CHYR Radio 7 Canada

CHYR 710 was a favorite of mine in the late 70's. Excellent daytime signal into Lansing. The nighttime signal on 730 was obviously diminished, but I could pick it up on a good night. WVIC-AM 730 was daytime-only at that point. CHYR's frequency occurred at the same local-sunset time WVIC would sign o...
