Re: Old cable lineups

I don't think that was Continental Cablevision - might have been something similar. Continental started in 63 in Tiffin and Fostoria in Ohio. Their first franchises in Michigan were in Jackson, Lansing and Roseville. Perhaps it didn't launch as Continental, but by 1967 it was branded as such, and o...

Re: Old cable lineups

Which explains why the system in the Canadian Soo imported WNEM and WJRT, until the early 2000s, when what became Shaw replaced them (and WNMU Marquette) with Detroit channels -- most of the time, when those stations had to pre-empt, it was for a regular special or a Tigers game. Note that the both...

Re: Plant Based Meat Substitute Products

Also inspired by this thread, I hit the local Burger King earlier today for an Impossible Whopper. It was surprisingly good with a flavor and moisture content more suggestive of a venison burger than a beef burger--and that's fine by me. Would I get another one? Absolutely! I'll get my next one with...

Re: Manistee, MI through the years

Did some cable systems in the UP pick up WXGZ? In the analog days, my great-grandma (who lived near Onekama) could occasionally pick up WGBA and WPNE, as well as W22BW from Sturgeon Bay, off the back of her antenna (which was aimed right at WGKI/WFQX) The Central UP cable systems operated by Bresna...

Re: Manistee, MI through the years

July 1988 2 - WBAY (CBS 2 Green Bay) ... January 1990 had the exact same lineup, which meant Manistee (and Ludington) missed the first few years of FOX as they never picked up WKBD, not even briefly in the late 1980s before WGKI came on (WGKI appears to have replaced WLUK in Manistee sometime betwe...

Re: Old cable lineups

Here's the cable lineup for Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in December of '89: (3) WNEM Bay City (NBC) ... (30) Home Shopping Interestingly, neither of northern Michigan's ABC or NBC affiliates were apprently carried in the Sault then. By contrast, if the TV Guide listing is accurate, Elliot Lake (midwa...

Re: Plant Based Meat Substitute Products

As far as meat substitutes in general go: the frugal Canadian inside of me can't wrap my head around meat substitutes costing more to buy than actual meat when they should cost much less to produce. If you've ever had good Falafel at a Middle Eastern restaurant, you know exactly what I mean--it's a ...

Re: Plant Based Meat Substitute Products

Some years ago, Burger King rolled out a Veggie Burger. Not related to today's Impossible Whopper, it received about the same amount of fanfare and media attention as the new Impossible Whopper upon its introduction. I love hamburgers and thought it might be a self-indulgent way to save a few calori...

Re: Sirius XM...

If SiriusXM didn't use such low-bandwidth streams for many of its music channels, I'd still be a subscriber. I can't justify paying for a service that, on the channels I used to listen to, doesn't come close to terrestrial FM stations in terms of audio quality. Listened to Willie's Roadhouse on Siri...

Re: Anchors sellling instead of reporting

Nothing new here. The 7&4/29&8 newscasts have a long history of devoting lengthy news segments to the opening and expansion of businesses in the TC area, especially banks and brokerage houses. 9&10 also does frequent and lengthy remotes featuring local businesses during the Michigan This Morning sho...

Re: 7&4 in 1980

Note that WPBN was probably still getting its NBC feed off-air from WOTV (now WOOD) and WNEM at the time. Still, it's incredible that they lose sync switching between the network pickup and local insertion. That should have been engineered out of their chain by early 1954. WPBN took off air pickups...

Re: 7&4 in 1980

Wow, great find! That "graphics package" looks like the same RHL character generator that we suffered with at CJIC/CKCY/CHBX-TV. What a pain in the arse... Re: TV RF Channel Changes

Thanks for sharing that, ftballfan. Seems odd to me that WOOD-TV would've been omitted from the 1954 listings. Surely those who were well-off enough to invest in the expensive early TVs and deep-fringe antenna systems required back then would've been trying to catch a signal from WLAV-TV/WOOD-TV. Al...

Re: TV RF Channel Changes

The Milwaukee stations are rarely a nuisance in the GR and Kzoo areas. One has to be far away from the city or within, say, 10 miles of the lake shore for that to be a major issue. A lot of people remember wwtv back when ch 13, Cadillac as the first tv signal they could get in Traverse City. But if...

Re: TV Guide

While residing in the UP, we always found the Sunday Free Press TV Book the most useful. TV Guide did not list CICO or CKCY/CHBX. Sometime after CKCY launched, they stopped listing CJIC. The Detroit News book did not list WJMN, CKCY/CHBX, or CJIC. One of our local drugstores gave out a free TV listi...
