Re: Upward Mobility

I haven't been in radio since '98, so take this with a grain of salt. But Reese certainly knows what he's talking about, confirming what I thought: Option1's salary guess is a bad guess. I doubt anyone in radio in Michigan (that includes maybe a couple of exceptions in Detroit) make six figures thes...

Re: Goodrich files for bankruptcy

Yup, mea culpa.
Probably not a good idea to do that anymore, what with all the #metoo stuff going on. |I

Goodrich files for bankruptcy

Goodrich Quality Theaters has filed for bankruptcy. For the kids, Bob Goodrich is the former owner of WVIC/Lansing, WODJ/Grand Rapids and WSNX/Muskegon-GR. From WZZM-TV: Goodrich Quality Theaters (GQT), a West Michigan-based theater chain, filed for bankruptcy in federal court in Grand Rapids. The ...

Re: Beautiful Music Stations in Detroit

Chris,
Yes! That is the station (The unFun One!). That's Geoff Brown on it, formerly of W-Light/GR.

The WMBN is a recorded bumper by Old Man Mac.

Re: Beautiful Music Stations in Detroit

I had the pleasure of working at one of the last BM stations in Michigan, 96.3 Michigan's Beautiful North (WMBN/Petoskey), in the mid-1980s. I also worked at a short-lived AC in Muskegon, which switched BM from the FM to AM while I was there for less than a year, 1991, then simulcast BM when AC fail...

Re: WFYC/Alma - Jon Heinlen

Sounds about right. I remember Mikus marking up records (yes, the station spun mostly vinyl with a few carts) that were R (restricted) for night only and some that would never be played. It was MOR crawling into the '80s AC.

Re: WFYC/Alma - Jon Heinlen

Thanks, CK. That clears up a lot. I remember working the night shift, and Sommerville hotlines me from the golf club: "Read the damn golf scores!" Apparently a little inebriated, he wanted each and every score read on air as they came in from the Masters for his golf buddies. Other than that, he was...

Re: WFYC/Alma - Jon Heinlen

Mikus! That is/was his name. Thanks. Dave Somerville is still the owner? He must be at least 90. Then again, I thought he was old when I was there, but I was just 21 or 22, so anyone over 30 was old, so what did I know? But he must have been about 50 when I was there, and that was almost 40 years ago.

Re: WFYC/Alma - Jon Heinlen

I worked there 1980-81. The name does not ring a bell. The PD at the time was Phil....um, can't remember his last name. Thomas?

Sorry. That doesn't help much.

Re: Holy Shnikies! What’s wrong with that Marysville council candidate?

Really? WHLS-AM and WSAQ-FM are Port Huron SOL, aren't they?

Sorry to hear about Port Huron's demise. I worked there in the early '80s. Lived south of downtown off Military, and would walk or bike-ride to work at WPHM and home early morning. Nothing scary at all back then.

Re: THE HILLS ARE ALIVE IN PORT HURON

That's sad to hear. The PD (can't remember his name) seemed like a good guy with some cred in AOR. I interviewed with him in Harbor Springs (I was in Lansing at the time) and then met Howard in AA. He was strange.

Re: The "personality" of radio stations

Just about every radio station I worked for scheduled stop-sets at :20, :35 and :50 past the hour. Sometimes the :20 break would give way to an extended music sweep, but the :35 and :50 breaks were pretty standard across the board. Pretty much every station did spot breaks at the same approximate t...
