Switching to/from another station's signal for network shows

This was actually common in the 60's among affiliates who couldn't afford direct network feeds or microwave connections. In that case, engineers would switch to/and from the signal of a nearby affiliate of the same network whenever they would show network programming. I know there were at least thre...

Re: WTOL NFL game choices

Actually the blackout radius was 75 miles. The WJIM transmitter was barely within the 75-mile radius of Tiger Stadium (if their transmitter was already in Okemos at the time). Also, this meant that WTOL still would've been within the 75-mile zone once they moved to the Silverdome. Something else to ...

Re: LMFAO at Kmart!!!!

Macy's is closing stores at Eastlamd and Westland malls... I wonder what goes in there? Eastland: that closing will definitely be the final blow to that place, they themselves just lost Sears five years ago, in fact, they've been bleeding stores since the turn of the millennium. I wouldn't be surpr...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

WSPD-TV (precursor of WTVG) did not air the original SNL's from 75-79; a 'summary show' was the first time it was broadcast in Toledo. Had to rely on the rare times that Buckeye remembered to switch the CH4 feed from WSPD to WDIV (or was it that yet?). WNEM in Saginaw also didn't carry SNL until af...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

It's interesting that WDIV seems to currently have a standing deal with WADL to air seemingly any NBC programs they don't clear. And yet, it doesn't seem like there are any other deals like that currently. I've read that in the old days of Late Night with David Letterman in the 80s, WDIV occasional...

Re: Then, there's this.....

Meanwhile, in other markets, on Saturday, WBAY in Wisconsin aired a sports report from February 6th during their morning newscast and within the last week WPTV in Florida aired a Romney ad from-get ready for this-2012!

Re: Detroit/Toledo Big Three schedule for 12/10/1980

and 2 of the 4 Storer stations in our region ended-up being FOX stations (WJBK/WJW) and the other two eventually switching to ABC O&O (WJRT/WTVG). Storer never owned WJRT. However, Storer did own two other stations that did become O&Os of networks other than Fox (KSND/NBC and WSBK/UPN, now a My Net...

Re: Detroit/Toledo Big Three schedule for 12/10/1980

In that particular case, broadcasters couldn't own more than one TV station in the same city, or within a certain distance of an adjacent city. Such an example is WJBK Detroit and WTVG Toledo, which were both owned by Storer Broadcasting before restrictions on adjacent markets were established. Whe...

And don't forget that when Carter announced that we weren't sending anyone to the Moscow Summer Olympics, NBC came extremely close to following the exact same path Dumont followed just 24 years earlier.

Re: Then, there's this.....

Also, someone from England who is staying somewhere in the far northwest corner of the DMA was being recorded by WDIV along US 23 near Fenton as the snowstorm was starting to hit up there and he referred to the region as "the Metroplex ." Someone must've gotten their "The D"'s confused, especially c...

Re: Then, there's this.....

Somebody got their circle 7's confused... 7's Jimmy Kimmel preview tonight was meant for KABC in LA. I saw a World News preview meant for the ABC affiliate in Dallas once too... That reminds me of a post I saw somewhere in another part of this forum that mentioned how a Marquette station on one occ...

Detroit/Toledo Big Three schedule for 12/10/1980

I found in a closet in my house a well-worn Detroit News from December 10, 1980. The main story then was the death of John Lennon two days prior. Stations listed, as shown at the top of the listings (which were on page 14B): WJBK Channel 2 (CBS - Detroit) WDIV Channel 4 (NBC - Detroit) WXYZ Channel ...

Re: Then, there's this.....

Circle 7, Mon. 2/22 0959. The weather update just before "The Doctors" was a clip from some days ago, forecasting warm temps and high winds. Not today's, for sure. They've been running an ad for a Friday story off and on for 2 weeks... Problem is it already aired 3 weeks ago... What's next, WXYZ co...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

Well, I hope WTOL didn't preempt any of the Peanuts specials for some talk thingamajig at all during the years CBS aired those specials. If so, then I'm sure hundreds would've be royally mad... Mtburb, from your posts you seem to be a fan of the Peanuts Cartoons. Did you see the Peanuts Movie that ...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

Thinking of what I said earlier of those of us down here either not knowing or caring, I'm sure there was one or two of us who bothered writing to our local stations about this very matter, and either not being answered or giving some surgar-coated response asspat letter to explain why they decided...
