Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
I read a good review of Alice Cooper's new album Road in the Detroit News (https://www.detroitnews.com/story/enter ... 648447007/).
I streamed the album. It's pretty good, very commercial hard rock, lots of fun.
Has it been getting airplay on Detroit rock stations?
Here's the opening track:

Old Uncle Fred (Jacobs) the so called godfather and inventor of all things classic rock, always makes it a point to say "We don't play new releases by classic artists"

There's only one station playing new rock and I doubt it's been playing there
Music is my life.
Re: Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
WCSX used to play new cuts from classic artists occasionally, and not just Bob Seger (believe it or not)

I remember playing a contemporary Eagles song in 2008 and a new Springsteen song.
Oh, and a new KISS song in 2009. One time and that's it. Sunday night at 9pm.

You cant even get these half baked stations to open their playlists for songs people actually want to hear let alone new material from aging artists.
Re: Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
I'm guessing you mean 98.7. From their Recent Song List, I'd conclude that any song off of Alice's new album would mean one less song from an alternative rock band that started after 1990. Which would probably make somebody unhappy.stopnswop2 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 2:14 pm There's only one station playing new rock and I doubt it's been playing there

WRIF also plays new rock. But this doesn't sound like the last rock band they played so they won't play it.Bobbert wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 6:42 pmI'm guessing you mean 98.7. Re: Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
That point was driven home to me in 1997 when very commercially accessible albums were released by Paul McCartney (Flaming Pie) and Elton John (The Big Picture), but got almost no airplay.Colonel Flagg wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 2:07 pm Old Uncle Fred (Jacobs) the so called godfather and inventor of all things classic rock, always makes it a point to say "We don't play new releases by classic artists"
About the only way for an older artist to stay relevant is to team up with somebody (like Tony Bennett did so well) or be a ruthless master of self-promotion, like Madonna.

Re: Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
In the case of Elton's "The Big Picture", track "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" would hit #1 worldwide, including the US -- only because it shared the A-side with "Candle in the Wind 1997", a new version of his 1973 song, with new lyrics about Princess Diana after her death that year. Alone, "Something About..." didn't even chart in the US or the UK (though it peaked at #14 in Canada).
Still on the subject of Elton John, his "duet" with Dua Lipa, "Cold Heart" (actually a remix of Elton's hits produced during the COVID lockdowns) made the Top 10 worldwide, including #1 in the US Dance Charts and #7 on the Hot 100:

Cooper does a remake of The Who 1968 song "Magic Bus" (also a drum solo & the audience clapping in the end).
Re: Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
After reading these comments and thinking a little more about the topic...
- 50 years ago, radio airplay would have been my first exposure to an Alice Cooper album after reading a review of it in the local newspaper. Now, I can immediately go to YouTube and streaming to hear the music.
- Road currently sits at #59 on the Amazon Best Sellers in Rock chart (https://www.amazon.com/best-sellers-mus ... =UTF8&pg=2). I'm sure the marketers of the album are very happy with this, and are making very good use of both the modern (YouTube) and tried-and-true (touring) ways of selling an album. Alice is hitting the road hard (pun intended) to sell this album, including stops in places like Enid, Oklahoma and Paducah, Kentucky: https://alicecooper.com/tour/

That's so cool—the last song on the album.

Re: Detroit Airplay of Alice Cooper's New Album
I've got a feeling this album will hit Satellite Radio before FM radio, if at all. Doesn't WRIF at least have a one hour show each week with new releases?
