Agreed; sounds good today!
Sister station 1270 still sounds flimsier than usual. Wouldn't surprise me if they are running that station at reduced power on purpose.

Why would a station run at reduced power on purpose? Most stations with high power brag about their wattage.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 12:46 pmAgreed; sounds good today!

1270 delivers a 0.1 or 0.2 share and is barely more than a clearing house for low rent national programming. Lower power = smaller electric bill.

Makes sense now.
Re: WWJ 950 broadcasting at reduced power?
I'll check it again tonight at 9:15 PM with the FI meter.

Well, I still didn't hear a carrier interruption at 9:15 PM tonight. Maybe they are working on it again. But the propagation is semi-auroral.

I wonder if 950 was on their night pattern all day today? If so, reception in the Toledo area would've been better than normal during the day today and reception in Ann Arbor (and especially points west) would've been worse than usual.
1270 is yet again faint. I can get an OK copy, but there is certainly more co-channel noise than when the station runs its full 50 kW.

Hey, they sometimes air Tigers games en Espanol! That has to be worth something. Surprised they didn’t work out a deal with 1310 where it would be more logical.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 2:21 pm1270 delivers a 0.1 or 0.2 share and is barely more than a clearing house for low rent national programming. Not where I live. 1310 is much stronger both day and night than 1270.

and there are pockets where that is true. there are more pockets where the reverse is true.

1270 when operating at full power definitely has greater land coverage.

Re: WWJ 950 broadcasting at reduced power?
WXYT 1270 has a null toward Western Novi at Night.
WDTW 1310 is on the edge of the major lobe toward Novi.
Looks like WXYT should be stronger than WDTW out that way at Night.
The FCC databases are all messed up while in the latest transition, so I could not find the Sunrise Sunset Times in the actual authorization. I had to plug the coordinates into their utility to find the correct Sunrise Sunset times. It turns out that July is a quirky month for Downriver facilities. WWJ Sunset this month is 9:00 PM and WXYT Sunset is 9:15 PM, being just enough further West to be in a different 15 minute Sunset tier this month. When I listen for a pattern change on WWJ this month, I should be listening at 9:00 PM.
In August, both WWJ and WXYT pattern changes are at 8:30 PM.

Re: WWJ 950 broadcasting at reduced power?
1310 has never had a reliable listenable nighttime signal in the Grosse Pointes, I can attest to this personally 1980-present, and my parents from the late 50's, 60's and 70's

The Night pattern of WKNR/WDTW 1310 finally did the Top 40 format in in 1972. Around 1980, a tornado collapsed some of the 1310 towers, and it was on STA nondirectional while it was rebuilt. For the first time, the signal was briefly better on the East side of the Greater Detroit Area.billmich88888 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 1:04 pm1310 has never had a reliable listenable nighttime signal in the Grosse Pointes, I can attest to this personally 1980-present, and my parents from the late 50's, 60's and 70's

The purple line is 0.5 mV/m, and doesn't come in on many radios in that area due to static and interference from other stations on 1310.
The 5000 watt Night Pattern of WXYZ/WXYT 1270 went well to the North, South, and East. It didn't have a null toward WVOY/WMKT 1270 in Charlevoix. Since WXYT was a main interfering signal toward WMKT, and had to reduce the field in that direction toward it by 10%, which meant reducing the effective power in that direction by about 20%. But in the directions either side of Charlevoix, there is more interference. Neither station is happy about the result, but they could never negotiate a settlement that satisfied both owners. But WMKT now has two FM translators which are close to the equivalent of old 3 kW Class As, being 250 watts at 900-1100 feet HAAT in some directions.
