The legendary crooner, who revived his career by duetting with many of the biggest names in pop and rock music while in his 70s and 80s, most notably with the likes of Lady Gaga, Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse, died this morning in his home in Manhattan of Alzheimer's disease at age 96. (I'm not providing any links, but I refer anyone who's interested to the Hollywood Reporter web site for an interesting piece on the vast number of performers Bennett duetted with in his later career; just amazing the number of people and the vast variety of genres he worked with.)
I was fortunate to see him perform live twice, the most recent time at Caesars Windsor probably 7-8 years ago, right around the time he announced his Alzheimer's diagnosis. He wasn't fully warmed up at the start of the show, but his voice got better as the show went on and it was a memorable night. His daughter Antonia Bennett was part of his show at that time and she was a darn good singer in her own right.

His biggest accomplishment was keeping a certain style of music alive. We lost a big connection to the past with his death.

I recall his appearance on Detroit's old Lou Gordon program where he stated he couldn't understand how anyone can consider the music of MC5 as "music". 
Here he ends up dueting with some of the more eccentric singers of the modern pop era to extend an amazing performing career.

It feels like the end of an era with the loss of Tony Bennett. He was one of the last few living old-school crooners. He touched generations of musicians, including his album with Lady Gaga.
In one of his last performances with Gaga, he had no idea what was happening, but as soon as the music started, he was having a blast.
Sad to see an American treasure go. R.I.P. Tony.
