WOOD TV Adds Another Meteorologist

Unread post by Localnewsisdead »

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — WOOD TV8’s team of meteorologists is expanding to be the largest in West Michigan. The station is excited to announce the hiring of Meteorologist Blake Harms.

Harms is the morning meteorologist at Nexstar station WLNS in Lansing and is a West Michigan native:

I thought they already had the largest weather team in the market, but I didn't realize 17 also has five now.

But Blake is more or less Bill's replacement once Bill fully retires.

I thought Bill was fully retired? The last few times I've checked into a newscast from WOOD he wasn't on.

I remember when Bill's Blog allowed commenting and Blake was on there when he went to Hudsonville. Blake is getting Weekend nights which Bill has been doing. I imagine Bill will only be on now when they need him to fill in for a day and special weather events.

Bill has only been doing weekend evenings since he semi-retired.

If Bill doesn't have a regular time slot once Blake comes on board, then I imagine what Honolulu suggests will be true: that he'll just be doing fill-ins and severe weather coverage, and probably some other special features/community events.

There's a post on Bill's Facebook marking today as the 48th Anniversary of his first broadcast on WZZM. Part of me hopes he sticks around a couple more years in his "emeritus" role just so he can celebrate 50 years on West Michigan television.

He is one of those “special” kind of people. If you know what I mean.

Yeah, I hope Bill stays for 50 years on West Michigan TV even if it's just for specials and when severe weather.

Its not that Bill is too cheap, its because he is a Weather Nerd. Investigating, forecasting, and all the other things is what makes Bill Steffan... who he is. He is one of the most genuine people I've ever met. He lives for the weather.

^ This. Bill could completely retire if he wanted to, but he still genuinely enjoys doing weather stuff. Even if he does fully step away from doing regular forecasts and such, I'm sure he'll stick around for significant weather events, community appearances, and special weather-related feature stories.

I seriously doubt he'll ever fully retire unless the station pushes it. He'll be like the weather version of Warren Reynolds.

In this day and age, it is rare (and refreshing) to hear about a person who enjoys his job that much.

The Blake hire is a smart move in an effort to recruit a new batch of local tv news watchers. Many 14-21 year old know Blake from his school cancellation predictions. That same demo simply doesn't watch news but I'll bet at-least "some" of them turn on the tv now to see him. Nothing to lose by the hire, and he's also really good.
