Could a Breeze Format make it in Toledo?

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

As much of a dog as Nash and Nash Icon are, they are clearly being drawn down on a market-by-market basis. Which is a good thing, those two brands were forced upon by the Dickey’s with no understanding of it would actually work as a brand.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 98.3 go to a “WARM-FM” softish AC within a year, especially if the mainstream AC format (which for all intents and purposes is what people are defining as “soft AC” or “easy oldies”) continues to have legs like it does.

No, mainstream AC is not "Soft AC".
That's "Modern AC" or "Fresh AC" and is trash.

Soft AC is gold based.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. I believe that 98.3 is going to stay committed to being a Monroe focussed station, whatever the format.
Yeah, whatever happens with 98.3, you’re gonna be disappointed.

I could see 98.3 changing back to some sort of AC format or classic hits might be good, something like WKXA in Findlay was.

98.3 can certainly go AC or Soft AC and maintain a Monroe emphasis.

Let's not forget - the station was My 98.3 WMIM - playing middle ground Adult Contemporary - before flipping to Nash Icon.

I will give 98.3 credit for one thing: the audio processing sounds damn good. Had business in the Toledo area this past week and took a listen to multiple stations.

The creepy religious station at 88.9 MHz really does a number on 89X's signal on the southeast side of town 89X was still listenable on my radio, but at certain stop lights, 89X's signal would disappear completely. Had no issue at all picking up 93.9 the River.

On I-280, 97.9, 106.7 and 98.7 were among the stronger Detroit stations. W4 from Ann Arbor came in great. Tried 101 WRIF and got zero signal from them (I wonder if interference from WRVF's HD signal played a role).

88.9fm, Can't remember now who owns that. I want to say Cavalierly radio but not sure. Might be the same format that airs on 102.9 in FT Wayne. The River barley comes in here in Wood co. I could see maybe, Nash Icon moving to 100.7 and 98.3 going soft AC. Heck, even Nash going to 106.5, maybe.

Still, 98.3 would work well keeping the focus on Monroe. If they were to shift to Toledo, I believe they would have to sell the station.

Pre Cumulus purchase, WVMO Voice of Monroe County 98.3FM, had a soft classic gold almost format- I liked it, and it was a good fit for Monroe, and could be again.
Breeze is a full-time station in Detroit City, but the HD3 stepchild of WRVF where it gets a SiriusXM talk channel should quality that hurts your ears with the fake high frequencies. Even WRVF-HD1 when it switches from analog to HD-1 sounds about 2dB louder and brighter- it should barely be noticeable; maybe engineer Bill's retirement leaves no one to watch over the audio, as Denny Moon (who used to make WCWA sound damn good for 250W/500W/1KW graveyard channel) who was shipped-off to transmitter duty only, but his current status is unknown. Could be Gary is all alone as engineer for the whole damn iHeart cluster??? This thread is getting confusing- iHeart, Cumulus back and forth....

Gold based AC would work in Toledo. The best place would be on 105.5, as "105FM 3WM"... It worked for many years. Bill Stewart could do morning drive. He's already in the building.

It seems like it would be a good fit, better then what Q105 is now, looking at The Cluster as a whole. RQN,XKR,K-100, yeah... perfect. What The old WLQR sounded like in the 90s-late 80s.

" Your at work station, soft rock 105.5 3WM" " Your favorite easy songs, Soft rock 105.5"

Agree with Col. Flagg- there is no perfect go to for an 'at work station' like 101.5 WLQR was 25-30 years ago, and even WRQN was okay 4-5 years ago, but neither would fly today. The Breeze would be okay (WRVF-HD3), but audio is quite shrill and unpleasant to listen to for any period of time- not the song choices, but the technology - I honestly The Breeze could have better audio with a full NRSC signal on AM. Otherwise, bring back 3WM, especially since Denny moved to 93.5 and BS is still around Cumulus.

1 - The legendary Denny Moon is still very much employed here at iHeart. Although it's been widely reported as such, he's never been strictly transmitters and spends 95% of his time at the studios.
2 - I'm not sure what you are hearing on WRVF-HD3. Other than a soft compressor to watch levels, there is nothing in the signal path that changes the tonal quality from what comes out of the audio server. I've heard it on three different brands of HD radio and I don't notice any shrill-ness. Then again, I know everything above 8kHz is inaudible to me.

Why are there no more WKRK stations ? (Detroit's departed in 2001 or '02.)

Call me stupid, but I just realized the The Breeze in Detroit and in Toledo are two different animals! 98.7 Detroit City has a totally different owner than iHeart, as iHeart provides the audio for WRVF-HD3.
Wonder if iHeart ever considered putting The Breeze, or Sunny, on 103.7 WCKY-FM instead of country?
I'm game for a Soft AC Gold format, ala CFCO 2004 on 98.3 or 103.7 if either Cumulus or iHeart makes the jump.

Gary Fullhart, my hearing drops off a cliff between 8Khz and 10Khz, so the AM 'whistle' doesn't bug me as much any more. The WRVF HD-3 just doesn't have a warm analog sound at all to me - sounds very digital, like a low bitrate MP3- it's not 'swirly' like Sirius crap, but just not comfortable for easy listening; maybe I'll have to redo all of the 15 audio settings my Kenwood HD Radio has until I find a good combination for The Breeze.
Also, glad to hear that the imfamous Denny Moon is still lending his talents since KE8EP retired.

Nielson ratings for all published HD2 substations never get more than or 0.2 or 0.3 share.

That should tell you how little they are used
And are those ratings for the HD.x alone or the sum of the HD.x and it's associated FM translators?

WOHO - Give it another try. I tweaked some of the settings.
