Corona Road? Really.

Post by CK-722 » Tue Jan 22, 2019 1:13 pm

I just heard the newscaster on WJR say that a Saginaw TOWNSHIP murder suspect, person of interest, was spotted at the Home Depot on "Corona Road" near I-75, in Flint TOWNSHIP. I really think that all new local newscasters should be given a crash course in Michigan Geography. They would then not make that mistake. CORUNNA ROAD is about One Mile North of Miller Rd., which is hard to mispronounce, as it is almost as ubiquitous as "Broadway". Corunna refers to the fact that it goes to CORUNNA, the County Seat of Shiawassee County, which the larger city, Owosso is not.

They must have not proofread the story before they air it, That’s funny.

It reminds me of an old joke about someone finding a body on Beaubien St., trying to report it to 911, not being able to pronounce it, and saying that he was going to drag the body over to another street that he could pronounce.

Or the novelty recording, "Hey Shirley" by Shirley and Squirrelly, where the Ross Bagdasarian (AKA Dave) inspired squirrel cannot pronounce "Eucalyptus" Street, and goes to Oak Street instead.

Well, I know some people that live up that way.
I believe they say the name of the road and the town the same way the announcer did.
Kind of like Wyandotte. If you're a native, it's Wine-Dot, not Wine-A-Dot.
Perhaps someone that lives in Genesee could weigh in on this topic.
I will check here in a bit. About 10 tonight I need to call someone that works on Corunna Road.

Edit: My peep that works on the road says Cah-Rona.
And where she works is in Flint Township.

Co Run Uh is the only way I've ever heard it pronounced.

Back in the 1970s, WJR had a Friday Night High School Scoreboard Show. They had a new announcer from Ohio that had just started. The first two weeks or so, I listened to the mispronunciations for laughs. The one I remember best is Frank n muth short u, not Frank n mooth, long u.

It was funnier still to laugh at an Ohioan, in the golden age of Bob Ufer, Bo Schembechler, Ricky Leach, and weekly 70-0 U of M blowout victories.

I can remember well when that guy drove his "Honey I Sunk The Kids" station wagon into the Detroit River.
Doris Briscoe was saying the name of the town Why-And-Dot.
Trust me. Every person that lives downriver says Wine-Dot. And fast. Neither syllable drawn out or emphasized.
I'm sure Matt Burb will back me up on this one.

People in Wisconsin are even more intolerant of mispronunciations of their geographical names.

My boss lives in Wyandotte.

She pronounces it "WHY 'n dot", three syllables, though the "n" is quite suppressed.

I've never heard "Wine A Dot".

The SIGHTING happened in Flint TOWNSHIP, not Flint.

The man, named Rosebush (not FROM Rosebush) was caught after a shootout in Shiawassee County, near Woodbury and Lansing Rd., near Lansing. The shootout actually occurred NEAR LANSING. If you want to get technical. Anyone who has travelled I-69 knows where Woodbury Rd. is. And anyone who has travelled I-75 knows where CORUNNA, not CORONA, Road is. It's not an inconsequential side street. It's a State Highway, M-21. And TV and Radio announcers LOVE to announce that something happened on Tittabawassee Rd., since they are socially stunted at the Middle School humor level. Or the social development level of Folk Music.

2 mV/m Contour. 50 kW Class I-A station on 760 kHz. Should know all the names and pronunciations within that.
