The song that introduced The American Breed, "Step Out Of Your Mind", in 1967, the better part of a year before "Bend Me, Shape Me ", was a huqe Regional Hit in the Midwest. It was written by Chip Taylor, Jon Voight's brother and Angelina Jolie's Uncle , and East Coast Session Guitarist and Songwriter Al Gorgoni. Chip Taylor also wrote "Wild Thing", the song by The Troggs, and "Angel Of The Morning", and solo Regional Hits, including "You Should Be From Monterey", with Al Gorgoni, a moderate Michigan Hit in 1967. "I Can't Let Go" was also written by "Uncle Chip" and Al Gorgoni.

I had to go back and listen to that song again, By God, there IS a steel guitar in that song. :o

I think he did some pedal steel on Graham Nash's "Songs for Beginners" album as well.

Not technically a back up singer.
But,
Tracey Ullman included a sample of Kirsty MacColl singing the word "Baby" in her cover of Kirsty's "They Don't Know", because she couldn't sing the note high enough.

However, in the music video for Tracey's version, Paul McCartney makes a cameo appearance at the end.
