Trump's Christmas gift to 401K, IRA and other investors...
I would like to thank the Orange Bozo in the White House for the unexpected departure of key cabinet members, the pissing off of our allies, the jeopardization of our own national security, and the angst he has caused the financial community through his haphazard, unexplained and largely unpredictable tariff policy.
I would like to thank the Democraps in Congress for refusing to provide funding for the Border Wall and playing petty politics despite the fact it is throwing our financial markets into further tail spin.
Spoiled brat #1 (Donald Trump) and spoiled brat #2 (Chuckie Schumer) have managed to deliver the worse December stock market performance since 1931 and the worst single-month stock performance since the first quarter of 2009.
While most of the blame belongs with the President, a substantial amount also needs to go to the Democrats. Schumer's recent speech on the Senate floor was disgusting.
Friday's massive DJIA plunge was the proverbial red bow on a December that had already seen major market indices head sharply downward.
The last time the DJIA closed as low as it did Friday was September 29, 2017.
Since September 21 of this year, the DOW has fallen 16%.

If you have any control over your investment/retirement accounts one can buy ETF's that short the market.....
DXD shorts the DOW and is up 39% since September 20
SPXU shorts the S&P aggressively up 67%
SH shorts S&P conservatively up 20%
SQQQ shorts the NASDAQ aggressively up 74%
PSQ shorts NASDAQ conservatively up 22%
The point is, if you think the stock market trend is going to continue down you can still make money or perhaps tread water by hedging with inverse ETF's

This recent slide has more to do with the feds raising interest rates for the 4th time this year than it does with Trump's unpredictable tariff policies or the shutdown. While those latter 2 items aren't helping things (they're more short-term weights on the market than long term), the higher interest rates are choking the market and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The tax cut is also overheating the economy. It’s starting to slow as a result. You cannot sustain 3% growth without damaging the thing.bmw wrote: ↑Sat Dec 22, 2018 11:05 amThis recent slide has more to do with the feds raising interest rates for the 4th time this year than it does with Trump's unpredictable tariff policies or the shutdown. As long as the CEO can still afford a third yacht and vacation home, all is well.

If you’re Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) of the Freedom (read: only for me) caucus you still get your salary in the shutdown while telling federal employees “you knew when you took your jobs that you would be at the whims of the politicians in getting paid”.... charming bastard...Mega Hertz wrote: ↑Sat Dec 22, 2018 12:31 pmAs long as the CEO can still afford a third yacht and vacation home, all is well.

Actually, it's the Fed's guidance for 2019 that has markets worried. They have a more bullish economic outlook than most of Wall Street and many economists. They believe probably two more rate hikes in 2019 will occur. This recent slide has more to do with the feds raising interest rates for the 4th time this year than it does with Trump's unpredictable tariff policies or the shutdown.
Trump wants to bloviate about the wonderful economy and then in the next breath bashes the Fed for its rate hikes. You cannot have it both ways!!
If the economy is as wonderful as he claims, the Fed *should* be raising rates!
The fact of the matter is many on Wall Street see Trump making impulsive, and at times, ill-informed decisions, they are concerned about increased potential for unrest in the Middle East, they are worried about Brexit, and they are especially worried about economic disruptions arising from (a) haphazard tariffs + sudden trade policy shifts and (b) dysfunction in Washington.
Some or all of the above factors - plus the corporate debt situation I mention below - lead many to believe we'll be in a national recession within 12 to 18 months.
The tax cuts and regulatory rollbacks spawned a lot of hedge funds and debt capital markets financiers to pump a lot of debt onto corporations' balance sheets. Companies have spent that money (plus money from the corporate tax cuts) to repurchase stock, hire employees, buy equipment, etc. That added debt load may prove to be crippling, in at least some instances, should operating cash flow of these companies soften as a result of a slowdown in the national economy.

Not if you lose... but members of Congress still get paid in a shutdown no matter what.
