Could 96.3 be the next Top 40
Could 96.3 be the next Top 40
It seems that 96.3 is already reacting to the demise of Amp Radio ,if so do you think 96.3 should rename the station and how would they re-image the station to go head to head against Channel 95.5 what do you think will work?

They are reacting though by playing large amounts of 90s and 2k songs though.
That's far from top 40.
I mean technically the station at one point was Adult Top 40, but they are leaning far towards Hot AC lately, almost Rhythmic AC I guess

Maybe GNASH could give their top 40 Format another go?
But I don't think they are at all willing to give up country.

Is there something wrong with 96.3's ratings or billing? doubt it
The biggest problem with CHR (and always has been) is you want listeners that are old enough to drink
no bar or club wants to advertise on a station that a bunch of kids listen to.
I think they see 105.1 is doing great with their "flashbacks" and want a piece of that pie
I seriously doubt we will ever see 2 CHRs in this town again, at least as long as Channel has Mojo
if someone wants to fire up a CHR and STEAL Mojo, that might work. otherwise, keep dreaming

They have had pretty steady numbers, so I don't at all anticipate a format change any time soon.
They will probably continue to tweak the playlist, but that's about it really.

I do have an issue with 955 though. They seem to be super selective with the hits and lean towards mostly rap and hip hop.
Amp Radio did a good job at covering all the bases of the current hits, which was why I preferred them over 955.
Even back in the day I usually would listen to DRQ over 955 (a lot, but not always), except for mornings, of course I needed my morning dose of Mojo. (Plus Jay Towers' voice always irritated me)

96.3 dominated with their Churban product against z955, the Fox. Then Channel vs DRQ, AMP. this is Detroit, you have to lean urban.

How about a return to WJR-FM? WLS-FM is tearing up to the top in the Nielsens in Chicago.

I think it's going to be awhile to another CHR emerges. AMP radio IMO ran it's course. 96.3's ratings have been decent so I can't see them doing anything at this time.

Re: Could 96.3 be the next Top 40
I somewhat disagree with this. They seem to be super selective with the hits and lean towards mostly rap and hip hop.
I would describe 95.5 as having a rhythmic pop lean. I don't hear much in the way of pure hip hop. 95.5 sounds less Urban today than it did a decade ago.
97.5 in Lansing and 102.5 in Saginaw play a little more way in the way of alternative crossover product, a little to perhaps medium amount more in the way of girly pop music, and may be a bit more current intensive (and quicker with new song adds) than 95.5, but the difference isn't gigantic.
Relative to Detroit's tastes, 95.5 is perfectly balanced. That's one of the reasons they've beaten the living snot out of 98.7 for the past several years straight! During the past year, the gap between 98.7 and 95.5 grew even further, with 95.5's ratings rising nicely and 98.7's ratings becoming increasingly worse.
As for 96.3, I'm noticing more dayparting in recent weeks. What I mean by that is I'm hearing *some* rhythmic product at night and during weekends that WDVD during much of its history would never consider playing. However, during the workday, the station is conservative and often sounds more AC-ish than Hot AC. Will be interesting to see if that trend continues or if 96.3 will instead elect to dial back the 80's & 90's stuff.
It would be idiotic of 96.3 to make anything more than minor tweaks to its sound at this point. They should take a wait-and-see approach. The station consistently posts strong ratings in A18-34, A18-49 and A25-54. It generally is very competitive with 95.5 and 105.1 in all three categories. 98.7 consistently was a non-factor in all three of those age groups, trailing 95.5, 96.3 and 105.1 and a number of other stations by big margins.
If 96.3 overreacts to 95.5 (after all, 95.5 will definitely pick up AQH share now that 98.7 is no longer Top 40), then they will risk losing listeners during the workday to WNIC.
WRIF is usually king of the hill of all three age groups, but as of late, their ratings have slipped a bit. Usually, advertisers aren't going to choose between WRIF and the aforementioned stations for buys. If you want to reach a predominantly male audience, you buy time on WRIF. If you want to reach a predominantly female audience, you buy time on WDVD or WKQI. If you want more of a suburban/white collar audience, you'll likely choose WDVD over WKQI as an advertiser. Of course, iHeart has a terrific equalizer in that regard in WNIC.

Could it be that at night the content is not from Detroit isn’t this coming from out of market with the Adam Bomb show. (who ever that is)And that’s why there’s a difference in music.

The Adam Bomb "show" is nothing more than a series of voice tracks inserted between songs. The song content is coming from Detroit. I believe Adam is based these days at Q100 in Atlanta.
Now, several years ago, he (and that uber douche bag, Perez Hilton) did host a nationally syndicated evening show geared toward CHR/Pop stations. It was designed to be aired live, and all content - including the music - came from the syndicator. WDVD did carry that incarnation of the show, but they chose to run it on a tape-delayed basis. At first, I believe it came on at 9 PM here, then it got pushed back an additional hour to 10 PM. Nationally, the show earned terrible ratings and it was eventually cancelled.
