A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

Cool FM 100.7 / 95.1 flips to classic rock

Post by MWmetalhead » Tue Jul 17, 2018 6:34 pm

Within the last week, the station completed its evolution to an apparent classic rock format.

Seems to be 80s centered. Sound familiar?

The brand name remains Cool-FM. They are now positioning as "Great hits, real classics."

The station is evidently filling the void caused by 106.7's abandonment of the format. The D was always popular in Essex County. Apparently, Blackburn feels it can monetize that audience.

Heard a couple minutes today. Didn’t notice a difference but then again I rarely tune in due to the poor signal.

Certainly 80s centric except Allman Bros and Crowbar (CANCON for the latter).

Is Blackburn selling any advertising? They seem to struggle in that regard, at least in Windsor. CHOK in Sarnia seems to do OK.

Nirvana and Tom Cochrane are also 90s. How is Crowbar considered CANCON when the band's out of New Orleans?

Forgot when Cochrane went solo. I thought Crowbar was out of Hamilton. Different group with the same name perhaps?

That'ss exactly the case. Wikipedia says as much:
Crowbar (Canadian band), a rock band from the 1970s, from Hamilton, Ontario
Crowbar (American band), a sludge metal band from Louisiana, who formed in 1988

Plalylist snippet from this evening; this is without question a strictly rock-based station now:

10:44 PM MY GENERATION BY WHO
10:39 PM LIMELIGHT BY RUSH
10:35 PM LEGS BY ZZ TOP
10:30 PM MR. JONES BY COUNTING CROWS
10:26 PM ANIMAL BY DEF LEPPARD
10:22 PM THE SHAPE I'M IN BY THE BAND
10:18 PM MONEY FOR NOTHING BY DIRE STRAITS
10:14 PM THE WAITING BY TOM PETTY
10:10 PM AHEAD BY A CENTURY BY TRAGICALLY HIP
10:07 PM THE JOKER BY STEVE MILLER
10:03 PM OOWATANITE BY APRIL WINE
9:59 PM ONE OF THESE NIGHTS BY EAGLES
9:55 PM YOU OUGHTA KNOW BY ALANIS MORISSETTE
9:49 PM MOTHER BY PINK FLOYD
9:40 PM HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL BY ROUGH TRADE
9:36 PM SMALL TOWN BY JOHN MELLENCAMP
9:33 PM DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY BY VAN HALEN
9:30 PM TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT BY EDDIE MONEY
9:26 PM EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE BY POLICE

They've tried Classic Rock before (it's been several years), but the stationality stunk during the last attempt. Detroit also had both 94.7 and 106.7 playing Classic Rock at the time.

With 106.7 now out of the picture, the format might garner decent ratings this time.

Blackburns giving it another try like you said MW with the D gone.

But its the same worn out tunes and cancon that no one gives a rats ass about in windsor/chatham that 100.7/95.1 the Rock used to play.

Blackburn still doesnt get that windsor rock radio listeners want a 70's/80's guitar rock/arena rock music format , thats why 106.7 the D was so popular in our area and forced Blackburn to change formats.

the format is dead out of the gate if it keeps to that current playlist imo.........

lets hope the slogan "Canada's Rock Station " dies in the process :barf

Bye for now I hear Shannon Gunnz calling

Is there any classic rock station in any major Canadian city with such a sound? I am unaware of any offhand.

Interestingly, there do seem to be substantial differences between the playlist of 95.1/100.7 versus sister station 98.1 Free-FM in London. Free-FM plays more of what I would dub "old man music." That said, ratings wise, Free-FM is doing incredibly well at the moment. I believe the station is now up to a 7 share or 8 share.

Agreed 98.1 skews older with far more 70s tunes. I tuned into both of these the last couple days while out that way.
