1560am WWYC Toledo Off the air

Post by Deleted User 10525 » Sat Mar 10, 2018 6:43 pm

They have been off the air for at least a number of days now, a week? I am starting to wonder if they might just wind up surrendering the station's License to the FCC. Which would leave 99.5 in Perrysburg as a stand alone. A day timer station really is obsolete anymore, even for a religious formatted station.

Either they are totally shut off or there running like at a couple watts, 99.5 is still IDing as "1560 WWYC" . If 1560 is shut down, you have an FCC violation here unless they switch the feed to KWAZ Twin falls, ID.

They are off. STA request says the transmitter has been operating at 1/3 power since 1/12/18. Now here's the real head scratcher: On 2/27, the "building owner" (which we all know is Cumulus) asked that the transmitter be removed from the building. Just what sort of other issues could this dying transmitter have been causing? It goes on to say that a brand new, smaller transmitter has been ordered. That's all I've got.

Thanks for the info.

According to Wikipedia, which is always subject. It says the station 1500 watts days, 920 Critical hours, and 3 watts at night. So, first thing I ask is, from a financial standpoint is this all worth it? Putting money into a station that has had issues for years, besides being a day timer, that was also another reason Cumulus unloaded it.

It could wind up they find its not worth it and they just turn the license into the FCC.

The original WTOD was 5kw directional. I believe only one tower remains, and that's the reason for the puny power levels.

So there were 4 originally? Didn't a couple of them get destroyed or something? Can't remember. Will be interesting to see if the stations comes back on air.

was 1560 at one point WTOD, and simulcasted 99.9 WKKO?

99.9 Was the original WTOD-FM. In fact, it was one of the first stations in the country to do top 40 on the FM back in like the late 60s. K-100 Simulcasted on 1560 for years, from the mid 90s till like 2004, when they put Syndicated right wing talk on there. Then of course 1560 was sold to CSN in 2010, or I should say traded off.

Ah, you youngsters. You're leaving out a lot of history there. 99.9 was WKLR long before it became WKKO. WKLR was, as far as I know, Toledo's first black station. WTOD was originally Top-40, but switched to country, if I remember correctly in the late 60's. The poster who calls himself WOHO can probably confirm this. WTOD had 2 towers. One east, one west. The east tower remains. Can't recall the calamity that caused the west tower to come down. WTOD did simulcast K100, but would separate from the FM to clear sports, auto racing, and weekend specialty programming.

Oh yeah, a little before my time but I've heard about it. I do remember WTOD having weekend shows and simulcasting K-100 the rest of the time.

Col Flagg is correct, 1560 WTOD ran 5KW directional daytime and had to shutdown to protect 1560 NYC and a their time also was related to a station in Bakersfield, CA? Cumulus wanted the 100.7 translator so bad that they made a trade, the AM for the 100.7 signal (which has to have a parent station). They hacked-down the 2nd tower as the ground wiring got butchered when Cumulus added on to the original 99.9/1560 building to add 1470, 93.5, 94.5 and 'Tower 98'. IF Cumulus had any cash, they were going to move 1470 and 1560 to a field in SW Toledo and build a new antenna farm- main reason, beside the rotted ground systems on both, is that you can hear 1560 on half the headsets inside the Cumulus building having that 1.5KW sitting 250 feet away, if that. And yes, KooLeR 99.9 was the first soul station in the Toledo market, infact, someone tried to burn the joint down because of that. WTOD-AM daytimer actually beat WSPD for a book, which was hard as SPeeDy was always the double-digit ratings leader in the day. And SPD ran country 45's during the overnight since there was no other country station - in fact, Jerry Anderson (WTOL-TV) used to get handed a stack of 45's to play all night until Jack Mitchell arrived in the morning. And yes, you cannot have a translator (like the Perrysburg station without a 'parent' over the air broadcaster), even if it's only an HD-2 or HD-3, it has to broadcast over the air, so they technically can't kill-off 1560 without a broadcast 'parent'. Maybe they should see if there's even one tower of the four left on Pickle Road that is repairable to be used as a compromised too short tower for 1560 and move the transmitter to Oregon to eliminate the RF spewing inside the Cumulus compound? (that is, unless the Dickey Brothers already sold their Daddy's first station property to somebody else for a nursing home or housing development) I though 1560 would go Spanish before 1520, and ironically the 96.5 LPFM Spanish just went on the air too.

My gut tells me it's not coming back. All 99.5 would have to is change the feed over to KAWZ in twin falls, like how they had it on 100.7. It's funny we went from none to 2 Spanish Langugage stations, albeit 96.5 is an LPFM. I do think somewhere down the road, a Spanish format will appear on a Commercial FM station or a translator anyhow. Speaking of which, I wonder if 1230 is going to get one?

I thought about 2 years ago that there was a translator within 250 miles that could be magically transported to Toledo for WCWA, but perhaps it isn't worth the cost for a 0.4 share station with very little local content, unless they were to move the Indians to Seaway instead of SPeeDy?

It's been off again or running at really reduced power for a little bit. I'll just throw this out there, could CSN apply to move to 1470am and have a 24/7 signal?

Not sure how accurate my source is, but my understanding is they bought a new transmitter for am-1560, and it's a very cheaply imported model that took a surge and coughed up electrons. So now they need replacement parts from Timbuktu to repair the brand-new transmitter already. They should have bought a transmitter from Canada instead. I'll have to check the FCC and see how long their STA is good for?

1560am is on the air as I type this, At almost midnight. They have been off the air for a good month now, either testing the new transmitter or someone forgot to power the station down. It's booming but you can faintly hear Family Radio's programming in the background.
