106.5 The Ticket ratings improvement

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

106.5 The Ticket ratings improvement

Post by 1027BrianFM » Sat Apr 29, 2017 10:25 pm

I see in the last couple of ratings period's, The Ticket seems to have gotten some of its mojo back after barley cracking 1 share for at least a couple years. They averaged in the low mid 2's for most of the time when they were on 1470 and early on at 106.5. What's drawing listeners back?

It's weird. They jumped from 0.8 to 2.2 in the fall and have pretty much held steady ever since. I thought back then that having OSU football had something to do with it, but that's not the case since their ratings were still up there as of April. And they're not stealing listeners from 1230 either, 1230's numbers although paltry haven't dropped. I really don't listen to anything on 106.5 besides occasionally Dan LeBatard's national show so I can't really speculate further on the effect any programming might have had.

Speaking of the latest ratings, IOT is back to obliterating XKR by almost 3 points...Andy might want to ditch the "Toledo's new #1 for rock" slogan on 94.5 anytime now.

Ditching CBS Sports Radio in favor of ESPN has helped 106.5's cause for sure. The ratings crash coincided with the switch to CBS a few years ago.

Becoming the Toledo area affiliate for the Buckeyes and dumping (name removed by request) from late afternoon/early evening have also helped.

None of this would be possible if that piece of shit, John Dickey, were still running Cumulus.
Radio station web sites that do not offer music logs or at least a "songs recently played" list are stupid.

I'm not a sports guy so I don't really listen to The Ticket but just found it interesting. My thought was brining ESPN back had something to do with it for sure.

Assuming you're talking about good ol' 5XL from Grand Rapids, he aired in Toledo for maybe a year around 2012-13 and was always on delayed at 7 PM, never live in drive time. And that station's had the Buckeyes as far back as I've lived here, since at least 2006.

I wouldn't think dumping one national sports feed for another would make THAT much of a difference, but apparently it does.

I can't think of ONE station nationwide that gets any ratings from CBS Sports Radio programming. (Except maybe from Jim Rome, and even his show is not nearly as popular as it was in the Premiere days.)

With Cumulus dropping CBS Sports Radio on many stations (not just 106.5), and CBS Radio itself about to be Entercom...is the 24/7 network about to fade away?

Is Frantz still doing his show from Cleveland? Er, Elyria that is? ;)

You're right that he was on delay, but I remember driving through the area and hearing him just after 6PM.

Could be. I just remember thinking how stupid it was to have a delayed Michigan-centric show on at the same time that the Tigers or Wings were usually playing.

Eventually Norm Wamer decided that Cincinnati Reds games made better evening filler on 106.5 than either 5XL or CBS Sports Radio. Until he was canned as PD and Andy Stuart rightly exorcised that billion-dollar demon from Cume-U-less' bottom line.

Of course. Elyria is closer to Toledo than Virginia is, at least.

Speaking of Frantz, what's Mr. Fake Perrysburg Brian Wilson doing these days? Still doing his fill-in for anybody anywhere anyplace anytime for $5 ?

I haven't seen any publicity for that service in a long time.

I remember Frantz's stint at WSPD around 2004, wasn't a fan. Wilson, at first I liked but his shtick got old real fast, "ron paul ron paul" . He pretty much crashed the ratings at Speedy and not to mention his home got foreclosed. Coupled with doing his show from Virginia. SMH

Without starting another subject, The tigers have no home in the Toledo market this year. Could they put the games on 100.7fm? or would that be too close to WMTR?

IMO, WMTR are just being d**kheads about any low power station in the Toledo market broadcasting the Tigers. 100.7's circle is close, but too close? 98.3 won't work with Detroit's DMA, 94.9 or 92.9 options but then you're not rebroadcasting 'host station' which you can't legally do. I'm going to get an XM subscription for 5 months just for MLB since terrestrial has let me down for the first time in 45 years. WJR would have solved it all if they had the games with their solid signal into Toledo 24/7.

WMTR's signal covers Toledo at full strength, as well as 38 other states, Canada and the Caribbean. Haven't you seen their website?

98.3 might work. Their COL is Luna Pier, but their stick is in Ohio (same tower as K100). Speaking of WMTR, their 60dBu signal doesn't even reach Toledo Express Airport, let alone 475 or the City of Toledo itself. When it comes to overlap, WMTR and WMIM's 60dBu contours don't even come close to overlapping (WMIM has a directional null to the west/southwest)

EnbyCee- aaahh, I think you're thinking of the Great Voice of the Great Lakes reaching 38 states at night.

ftballfan- Cumulus should approach them about 98.3 - good suggestion!
