New Marquette radio stations....

Post by MetalUpYourAss1973 » Thu Oct 09, 2014 12:15 pm

I don't know when this happened since I listen to XM radio all the time. There are a few new Marquette area radio stations lately. I noticed a new 97.5 in Marquette called "Good Time Oldies" or GTO. The 105.1 that was a translator of 88.3 is now running a higher power with a Fox Sports format. The only website info I have been able to find is GTO.FM for 97.5, which sounds like it is the same as 1400 WQXO Munising, MI.

Looking at http://www.northpine.com/broadcast/mi/radio.html Ishpeming lists a 97.5 being a translator station, however the wattage is much stronger than indicated. Same thing for 105.1 in Marquette. It looks like they are both owned by Great Lakes Radio.

Listened last night on WQXO.com..... they are promoting as "1400 GTO." The Top of hour is "WQXO 1400 Munising and 97.5 Marquette."

#1) I'm not a programmer, nor have ever been in radio, but wouldn't you hype the FM?

#2) 97.5 WQXO. Nobody (outside of radio) knows what GTO is.

#3) Now Marquette has oldies/classic hits on 97.5 99.5 and 100.3! Wow!

They do stream so one can listen.

#2) 97.5 WQXO. Nobody (outside of radio) knows what GTO is. "GTO" also refers to the car, the Pontiac GTO,which is part of their logo promoting oldies from that time period.

Another thing to note for those with HD radios. 101.9 WKQS sounds like they are in a testing phase. I was trying to listen to the Miners/Hematites game Friday night and noticed my radio was showing an HD1, HD2, and HD3. HD2 was 105.1 and HD3 was 97.5. Reception was very spotty.

Earlier today, the ID was "WKQS-HD3 Negaunee." No ment of WQXO
-AM at all.

My 2 cents worth. Why not be "97-5 QXO", vs the current "GTO" branding?
Several months ago, the were the True Oldies Channel, then "1400 QXO", and now "GTO" and so, you almost need a scorecard to keep up. Call it what you want, it's still "Q-X-O".

Still, the station does sound good. Sunny FM, 103 FXD, 98-3 RUP (and 92.7). With the addition of QXO, this is one more piece of the puzzle. It'll be tweaked. It'll be good.

The WQXO calls offer several options - Q-97, Q97-5, X-FM, Q-FM, etc...

Wouldn't Q cause confusion with Q107?

Too...97 might look like Magic 97.

97-5 Q-X-O is my vote..... Oldies is possibly owned by "Oldies 99.5" and easily QXO is known, possibly remembered by the demographic. The music and presentation are good and upbeat, tho website shows "George in the Morning" and on another page shows someone else from "5am-1pm Central."

The radio band is much more crowded than years ago. Now I would go for exact digital frequency vs a rounded out number.

Possibly advertise on Marq-Tran buses, possibly on BACK of bus, thus if stuck at light behind bus....

I wish QXO good luck as in the '80s I remember "QXO" on 98.3 and 1400. Too, there was a post years ago with the "#1 song of all time"....Bad Bad Leroy Brown.

To think years ago, all these stations were live/local 24/7. I'm getting old!

Back in the day, WQXO's branding was "Ninety Eight Three and AM Fourteen...Q-X-O". Seems to me that "Ninety Seven Five and AM Fourteen...Q-X-O" would work today...

And back way-back-when - it was "Music Radio WQXO" with no mention of call letters ('78-80) and before it was "One-Forty WGON/WQXO-FM" with no mention of the FM frequency.

In the Dave Schaberg managing days - it was a clone of WJML/WMUS.

Under Morgan Marti's ownership it was strictly local and just "WQXO". (remembering the days when all commercials were voiced by Morgan and his wife).

My "vote" would be "97-FIVE (W)Q-X-O"

Sunny 101.9 is now Sunny FM. Extreme Country 103 is now "103 FXD" (and I remember Fox 103") and co-owned 98.3 was, of course, "QXO" went WHCH "Hot Country WHCH, and later/now as 98-3 WRUP (simulcast on 92.7.)

Stability is WJPD, 95.7FM, Magic 97 (though as I said sometime ago, I'd go with Magic 97-1"), 94-9 the Bay and Q107.

I guess I'd tweak Sunny to Adult CHR and I swear Q107 should be CHR. . . but that's a different thread. I believe Q over reacted to 94-9. 97 stayed true to the format. Sunny, to me, began as "WKQS", evolved to Sunny 101.9 then to Sunny FM.

Sunny and Q heavy on 80s.

ESPN UP and 97.5 are new additions. ESPN. Do they mention the 93.3 even?

To me, QXO has an excellent selection of music. To me, again, the word "oldies" is not horrible. Consultants deemed to word as horrible. The music is "old" we are not!

WQXO was, for a while, my go-to station back in "The People Connection" days. If only they would've been in stereo, they would've been a credible alternative to WJML and WFNN.

It may be hard to imagine today, but the FM dial was mostly dead air in the Central UP back then. There just weren't many choices.
Eschew obfuscation.

So how many HD radios are in the UP? 3? ;)

Also, do 1400 WQXO and 1490 WTIQ compete in any way (as a second market, meaning Munising-Manistique?)

Better yet, how many people have them but don't know it? Some car manufacturers have HD radio built-in, but there is always that bunch of people that only listen to that one station all the time and never use any of the "extra" stereo features, or even know how to for that matter.

On a side note, I was flipping through the stations yesterday and heard Marquette's 105.1 ID themselves as WKQS HD2 without including any frequency in the ID.

One thing I know for sure. It comes in on 95 just North of Iron Mountain. Noted in Covington. My guess is Munising gets the 97.5 as well. Pretty good for 10 watts! ;)

The GTO format is certainly more uptempo/peppy than other stuff. The TOC went mostly 70s after a while and hearing one jock 24/7....c'mon!

One thing to ponder: the songs are
way over 50 years old! Life for me is going too quick, and I don't know where time has gone, but GTO does have a refreshing presentation, deeper library songs and not the same "good times and EIGHT oldies!"

97.5 is probably up a ways on 103.3's stick (103.3 is almost a max height C1)

Along Hwy 45 to Ontonagon and to Houghton and Calumet, "97-5 GTO" was heard! Certainly not booming in, but it was there! Also noticed the "97-5" vs "1400" mention. Really a listenable station vs the other stuff around.

106.1 is on with Christmas music. 106.1 the Gift. IDs as WFXD-HD4 Marquette.

I honestly wish this was used for more than this.

Oh great! Another "oldies" station playing the same 50 songs ad nauseum.
