Many are speculating on whats going to happen, but a UP Radio Group has been sold. I've been told new owners will take over tomorrow.
Plus we've heard another group has cut their morning shows on atleast 2 of their stations to cut costs.

Look for a press release today by the sound of it, only problem is most of the staff's of the stations being sold have been in limbo since late last week, that's not any way to treat radio or any people.

From the Press Release:
Sault Sainte Marie based Sovereign Communications has reached and agreement with Northern Star Broadcasting to purchase their Upper Peninsula radio stations.
The eleven station, multi-million dollar acquisition will give Sovereign Communications a total of seven radio stations in the Sault Ste Marie and Newberry area, where the company already owns WSOO-AM, WSUE-FM, WNBY-AM and WNBY-FM. The deal includes local WYSS-FM, WMKD-FM and WKNW-AM, plus five stations in Marquette and three in Iron Mountain.

Does this mean the end of the Big Country mantra in the UP?? I sure hope so, I hate corporate radio.

Looks like there is a station not in the deal, is NSB keeping WIHC-FM? I doubt that, they must be looking for another buyer due to Monopoly rules for Newberry. Also with WSUE-FM, WYSS-FM and WMKD-FM how does Sovereign stay under FM Monopoly rules in the Sault.

I think they would be allowed 4 FM's and 2 AM's...

Even with the Pickford license I gotta believe with signal strength it would be included in the the FM numbers for the Sault. I would defer to someone who knows how the FCC comes up with what they consider a "market signal" on this one since that's not an area I know enough about to contribute anything worthwhile to this thread.

The FCC study has already been done. There are 4 overlapping 3.16 MV contours in the same service that are allowed for the Sault market. WSUE-WYSS-WMKD-WNBY-FM are the 4 that fill the number allowed to be owned by one owner.

Will be interesting to see what they do with the "Bear"-branded rock stations in Iron Mountain and Marquette.

With all the classic rock/classic hits type stations in the area maybe they should take a harder more aggressive approach. Expand the size of the playlist and play more of the heavier rockers of the last 30-40 years. I can only hear the same 100 songs so many times before I break. That's my take on it...purely opinion.
