Remembering Coast FM

Post by Frank Booth » Wed May 23, 2018 6:11 pm

Back in the 90's, My family used to go up to Traverse City for Vacation for about a week and half in the summer. One station, on a couple of Trips I used to really like was Coast FM. 95.5 WLJZ, 94.5 WJZJ, and I think 93.9 WAVC? I used to listen on 95.5fm on my Walkman. I miss the smooth jazz format overall, really good stuff. Anyway, The liners were done by someone with a fairly deep voice, "Relax and unwind coast FM" . I think most of the programming was satellite fed, I don't remember too many hosts on there. I went back in 2000 and it was The Zone,:(. Although, a little later on I really liked 92.9fm but now thats CHR. Anyhow, Coast FM was enjoyable on my couple of vacations.

I didn't really listen to 94.5 Coast FM (and the tower wasn't even 2 miles from my grandparents' house). Not even as the Zone. I believe back then WAVC was a simulcast of WMKC. I remember when Coast FM was 94.3 (before Del owned it), and coming around the corner on Freedom Rd just before Old Mackinaw Rd would disrupt literally EVERY signal from any radio station you were listening to in the car.

They were running a RCA "firebox".

I really liked Coast FM too. Very relaxing. I always thought that Del himself did the liners although he denies it. He must have been using some kind of voice processor with the knobs cranked really hard to one side to get that voice.
WKJF later changed their calls to WJZQ and picked up the format. Ahh it was back on, but not for long. After a year or so they changed over to the noise you now hear on that station.
May the Smoooth Jazzz someday return to our market.

I'd like to know what a RCA firebox is too. Yeah, the stations voice was very low and smokey sounding . Would love to hear some air-check's from it.

Yes. He's thinking of David Lee (I believe that's the fella's name).

For a spell during the 90's, he did V/O work for all of Del's stations on the FM dial, including Coast FM.

He also images the NFL on Westwood One.

He does sound like he could be the ambassador of Coast FM. Can anybody put up a air check of the Coast? How about it Del, are you around?

We had Adult Contemporary on 94.3 until Del bought it in late 1994. He then changed it to "Coast FM" with Smooth Jazz.
