Clete Dumpster did sports and he was funny, but his reports were light on content (that was one area where 'JR and J were blowing WOW away). Clete died a few years back, as did News Director Bob Schuman. Steve Monkevich was the overnight announcer. Mark Elliott was midday, Dr. Don Carpenter in the afternoon, along with Todd Fowler. Those guys were all solid, but there were a lot of poor amateurs (Jim Daniels and Katy Moroso) on the talk shows who sounded juvenile. Katy was a bit of a backstabber, too. With their sophomoric humor and trying to run WJR down all the time, it came across as really stupid. Randy Michael's idiotic idea to go after WJR and run the reverb, which was really annoying.
As for the news department...Bob Schuman & Casely Conley co-anchored morning drive, and James Gemmell did live studio and field reports. RC Bauer was Assistant News Director. Tom Corbett field-reported. Toni Kayumi was evening news anchor. A great news department, one of the best assembled, the weak link being Karen Dinkins, according to Bob Schuman (he and Karen hated each other). Bob also thought John Delle Monache was anal-retentive and he was right. Sounded like a robot. Delle Monache hurt WOW-FM listenership quite a bit.
But the solid breaking-news coverage and the talents of Dr. Don and Mark Elliott couldn't prop up the amateur talk shows and the mind-numbing reverb.
