I read somewhere that 7&4 didn't really have a full staff of anchors and reporters until Raycom bought the station in 1997? Is that true?

Years ago, 7&4 had an anchor named Johnny Williams. He used to swat flies while reading the news.
I could swear I remember a Johnny Williams on WGTU (29) back in the mid 70's. Would write the first letter of every word in his forecast haphazardly across a map of the lower peninsula on the wall. Didn't know he ever worked for 7/4...

Johnny Williams is something of a Northern Michigan TV legend. He was with 29/8 in the late '70s as an afternoon movie host (The U&Q $2.98 Movie) where he'd pick up a local phone book from a pile of them and call someone at random. If the callee knew the amount of the jackpot they'd win it. If not, another $2.98 would be added. He also had a local late afternoon weather forecast with a long nonsensical "weather word" made up of parts of the actual forecast.

I was told that at one time he'd release a turtle within a circular pattern of possible forecasts; whatever forecast the turtle scampered to, that was the forecast! I don't know if that's true or merely apocryphal. :razz You'd have to ask a long-time T.C. resident. He might have been at 7&4 at the time.

(edit)
I see Mars has already mentioned the turtle on the previous page. :lol My apologies for being redundant.

If someone has newscasts from the '70s of any of the stations, that would be great to see. I went through my tapes, but the earliest local newscast is 7&4 doing their coverage and interviews on 9/11. I'll have to tap into my grandparents' tapes next time I'm visiting them. I do remember seeing a "Share the spirit of 9 and 10" ID on a "Neil Diamond Special" somewhere. I'll have to find that tape again, maybe there is a newscast as well.

That'd be really neat to see too. If I get a Betamax player and play the few Beta tapes that are in my reach, I could find something from the 80's.

Its not much, but I found a clip from a 7&4 newscast and a bit of a candidate's debate hosted by Dave Walker:
https://youtu.be/2PyAYuHa_W4

The debate is copyright 2000. Not sure on the year of the newscast clip. Sorry for the poor quality -- 7&4 didn't come in all that well for me back then! There was more of the debate but I thought a short clip was enough. I also included the end of the credits just so I'd have the copyright year in the video.

In my collection of tapes, this 7&4 newscast from '91 is the oldest one I have right now. Sadly, it's a partial recording and the equipment at 7&4 was not doing very well that day. Blackouts galore!

Opening sequence on that one. Awesome! Kind of looks like WJRT's set at the time.

The 1991 clip takes me back. I worked there at that point. The pay was not very high, but it was a good place to learn. Up there people say "Half the pay is the view of the bay."

I don't mean to derail the topic of this thread, but I wish there was more old footage of Alpena's CBS affiliate WBKB 11. All we have is is this little snippet 2 minutes and 32 seconds into this video here:

I *think* we've basically considered Alpena to be part of the N Mi market for this forum...

I don't remember 7&4 ever having a noon newscast... when did that end?

And I like the graphics of the "NewsChannel 7&4" but the audio isn't much. Very lacking a "News theme" in my opinion.

Didn't 7&4 have 11:00 AM news briefly a few years ago?

Very briefly. I think it started when Today expanded to four hours

Correct. I *think* it lasted two years? Adam Bartlemay was the only anchor, if I recall.

Several years ago I contacted ABC 29&8 about why they didn't have local news programming. The response I received was unexpected. Basically they said the other stations in the market have news programming so why should we? While I understand the cost end of things, the northern Michigan market may have a somewhat lower population but it's quite a vast area.

If they could have had the adverts behind it, 29&8 could have focused on the small-town/village/township "life" so to speak, and in my opinion done quite well. 9&10 does cover the entire market, but still has more of a TC/Cadillac and Mt Pleasant focus. 7&4, while still mostly focusing on TC, has started to expand again since Sinclair bought the station.

29&8 might still be a stand-alone operation if it had had a news department.

Doesn't 7&4 co-op news on 29&8 like Brewvine & 10 do on {insert something here} 32?
