Detroit OTA schedule for 7/1/1995

Post by mtburb » Thu Mar 28, 2019 9:02 pm

Source: Detroit Free Press, July 1, 1995 (the pages I needed happened to be free to view on newspapers.com because someone made clippings of the schedules on those pages)

This is in the midst of a weird hybrid moment in Detroit TV history - WJBK, WXON, WKBD and WGPR were each getting used to their respective new network affiliations; though The WB and UPN did not air programming on Saturdays at this time; WKBD continued carrying Fox Kids; and WGPR found itself carrying programming not typical of a CBS affiliate, let alone a just-minted one, including cartoons 2 Stupid Dogs and SWAT Kats. WGPR was in the midst of being sold to CBS and most of it's local programming had already been purged or were about to go off the air. WADL would continue it's struggles to compete with what essentially had become three stations that were sort of independent - WXON, WKBD and CBET, the latter because that station was required to preempt American shows that the Detroit stations had the rights to.

I will need corrections for program titles thanks to the Free Press abbreviating many of them.

So here's what a typical Saturday in the summer of 1995 looked like. This also happened to be Canada Day, so CBC was bound to preempt normal programming.

]WADL (Independent 38 Mount Clemens)
6 AM: America's Clown
6:30: Sonshinny Day

Does anyone out there know what exactly was America's Clown? It sound like a clown who was big in the 70's or 80's who has just stayed around too long, (maybe a little like Krusty.)

Probably, from all of what I know, just one of the super-cheap programs WADL was airing during the 90's.

Back then their seemed to be a lot of syndicated action shows or dramas on the schedule, most of which are forgotten:

Babylon 5 (okay that show kind of has a following)
Forever Knight (which was a good show that was a kind like Angel before Angel)
Sirens
Vanishing Son
Robin's Hoods
University Hospital
High Tide
What's kind of sad is that I remember most of these shows.

I loved watching cartoons back in the late 1980s and 1990s.... man, that was a wonderful era for animation.. he-man, the raccoons, eek! the cat, ducktales, iron man, reboot... ohh man, i miss when 62 aired Swat Kats! that show kicked ass... too much ass, actually, as it got cancelled for being "too violent" and "too intense for kids"... that and Ted Turner's wife (Jane Fonda) didn't like the show... isn't that always the way, that the best shows never last long? :p

I agree that a subchannel showing classic cartoons (i suppose for me, that would be 1980-2000) like that could, and likely would be quite popular and successful. I know Me-TV had a H*** saturday morning block of cartoons from the 1950s and 1960s (mostly older MGM stuff like Mr. Magoo)... Luken Communications' PB&J subchannel only lasted a few years and was only available here and there, but definitely not everywhere... the downside is, most programming from 1980-2000 is fondly remembered, and thus, the broadcast rights are either extremely expensive, or outright unavailable (since the current owners might want to put them on their own cable networks or streaming platforms)... c'est la vie...

Your right with what your saying about ownership rights and all.....but I still dont know what the owners are waiting for not showing some of these great cartoons??? If they wait too long will anyone care about them when they are released around 2040....lol.
