Status of WSRT?

Post by Nelson » Mon Feb 20, 2017 10:37 am

Just curious, does anyone know what the status is of 106.7 WSRT now that they are owned by Baraga Broadcasting? The last I heard, they were going to switch to Catholic programming "sometime in January of 2017" according to the latest press release I found. Today, Feb. 20th, they still have ESPN programming.

I believe it's because the sale between Northern and Blarney Stone hasn't been completed yet. The sale of WSRT to Baraga, which is also involved, would of course take some time. I was expecting 106.7 to change in January as well, but as I have learned more about the radio business, I realized that radio sales can take a while. I hear the sale MIGHT be complete by April, but that's just speculation.

WSRT 106.7 - You may have reached "The Peak", but you still struggle to climb the mountain of success.

Furthest FM Tropo Catch:
KDJS-FM 95.3 Willmar, Minnesota
Recieved on 7/3/2018, about 435 miles from Lake Township, MI

Delays like this don't happen for no reason.

Perhaps there are encumbrances on the seller's side preventing the deal from moving forward (e.g. inability to assign leases or contracts to the buyer), OR Blarney Stone could be having difficulty raising the amount of capital needed to close on its acquisition.

The chances of the FCC denying the deal seem slim, but I suppose the desire to get the FCC's stamp of approval before anything happens moves forward could also be the explanation for the delay. (If I'm wrong here - meaning the FCC has already approved the deal - someone please let me know.)

It's odd that Blarney Stone's people were already bragging to the local print media about their purchase, upcoming programming changes, etc. without having even so much as an LMA in place.

I cannot help but wonder if this whole deal will unravel.

I can't believe how much press in general Blarney Stone seems to be getting. Reading all the positive press about WQON, you'd think it was the greatest station on the planet!

Not approved, not even filed with the FCC yet. They announced the sale but have not yet actually applied to buy the stations, according to the FCC website. My gut says the financing has fallen through.

The Grayling station sounds really cheap.

Interesting. To take it a step further, what do we think Baraga Broadcasting will do with all the other little AM and FM stations they currently operate? It seems like 106.7 will have sufficient coverage that Baraga might be able to sell off some of their smaller stations.

Baraga's only AM was in Grayling (WGRY-AM) and that has already been spun off to the Catholic broadcasters on a long term lease for what I believe was $1 a year.

What about WIDG 940 AM? Though now that I look at the coverage map for 940, it covers more of the EUP (during the day) than 106.7, so maybe they'll keep 940.

Still, it looks like WTCY 88.3, WTCK 90.9, and W221CA 92.1 would be redundant.

As far as I know, WTCY puts out a better signal in TC than 106.7 does. I'm going to make another prediction involving the Baraga stations in my now off-topic predictions thread.

To be finalized April 2017. FCC approval would come after that. Lots of underlying issues can slow a transaction such as debt, tax issues, multiple owners, divorce, death of an owner, litigation, bankruptcy and much more.

If the deal fell through, Northern needs to communicate that. Northern and Baraga are located in the same office park.

There is timeline creep but no substantiated information this isn't going through.

Re-reading the article, I couldn't help notice that Coyne said that KLT would remain as-is, but would only add some of the deep tracks Q100 plays. In other words, I guess Terri Ray's job is safe. :rolleyes

I just checked the FCC web site and nothing has been filed for a transfer for WSRT. At this time, there is nothing in the works for the FCC to approve.

Back when this topic was first posted, I posted that I had heard that is never was a "sale" but an "LMA" of the Northern's stations. I'll stand by that information, even though no one else seems to think that I might be correct.

Given recent developments, I do think you may very well be correct. However, at this point, I question whether even an LMA will move forward.

This whole situation is bizarre.

I wonder if it's Baraga who is holding things up? Northern Radio certainly cannot hand control of WSRT over to Blarney Stone, and at the same time, I doubt Northern wants to take WSRT silent for any period of time while its status hangs in limbo for the sole purpose of being able to move forward with Blarney Stone. In other words, I suspect Northern Radio wants both deals to close simultaneously.

Moral of the story - make sure you have everything tee'd up, ready to go, before issuing press releases.

If the sale to Blarney Stone falls through, everyone & their mother will know about it (by virtue of the press release from several months back), which could present an immediate, negative effect on enterprise value.
