Eagle 101.5 on 106.3

Post by fmdxguy5678 » Sat Oct 21, 2017 8:13 am

I decided to DX this morning (picked up some Owen Sound stations along the way) and apparently, WWMN is relaying WMJZ rather than WMTE. They must be having an issue with their tower...

WSRT 106.7 - You may have reached "The Peak", but you still struggle to climb the mountain of success.

Furthest FM Tropo Catch:
KDJS-FM 95.3 Willmar, Minnesota
Recieved on 7/3/2018, about 435 miles from Lake Township, MI

I'm sure it's just a band opening.

They're relaying a different 101.5 because of tropo interference to the signal their equipment is searching for, meaning because of the tropo, Gaylord is coming in so strong that it is overriding Manistee's signal that the equipment would usually relay.

Same thing happens with translators, which are more commonly the unidentified mysteries us DXers have when we hear one signal where it totally shouldn't be heard (wrong frequency) and have to backtrack to figure out what tower may be erroneously receiving and rebroadcasting it. In this case, it's a very easy one since you know you were hearing WWMN, whereas during the big openings from longer distances, people can have unknown stations that take months to figure out til they come across the info they were searching for, like when a translator in Detroit, 100 miles away from your listening location (for example) is supposed to be rebroadcasting a signal from, let's say, Pontiac. But it's picking up a much stronger signal via tropo from Columbus, Ohio, and all you hear are Columbus area ads with no station ID. Plus, you're hearing nothing else from Ohio at the time. Then you clearly have a Columbus station on a frequency in which there ARE no Columbus stations... and you're left scratching your head thinking "WTF?!" But because the translator you picked up was 100 miles away, you're not readily aware of it. And even if you are, you struggle to know for sure if that translator is what you heard.

Reasons I don't like receiving DX in this fashion...

A few weeks ago, I picked up CBS Sports Radio on 98.3 in Ypsilanti. At first I thought the Monroe 98.3 had flipped to sports, but then the Monroe station came in. I was getting the 98.3 translator in Detroit, which was relaying WKRK-HD2 (CBS Sports Radio) instead of WMXD-HD2 (K-Love).

Also, when 107.9 in Manistee was rebroadcasting the 92.7 in Ludington, I heard WRPP on 107.9 on quite a few occasions. I also heard WAUN once in a while.

Back when WBRN had the 95.1 frequency in Reed City, rebroadcasting their 107.7, I heard 107.7 out of Kalamazoo more than a few times.

I heard that 95.1 once from Fremont on one of those winter days where just every distant or even remotely non-super-local station is blocked out by poor atmospheric conditions. My usual WIIL was just totally gone along with everything past Grand Rapids. And I heard that translator in weak. Kinda the exact opposite of what you describe there. I hear 107.7 sometimes, but 107.9's IBOC does a number on it and it has VCY to deal with as well.

Earlier this morning,106.3 now owned by the WJML folks, was airing WIXX Green Bay.101.1 here in TC was airing 'JML.

Was kind of hoping to hear "Fife" this afternoon assuming he is still at that station.

The last six or so years have been really, really weird for stations in Northern MI...

Tropo strikes! WWMN must be picking up 101.1 over the air

Not to be confused with 106.3 WWMK MacFM in the Straits. Just sayin...
