Which station started the "(channel number)&(channel number)" branding in Northern Michigan?

Good question.

I know that 7&4 ran separately for several years, even having their own individual newscasts. Channel 4 signed on in 1959, five years after 7 signed on. I think 9&10 has always been 9&10 ever since channel 10 signed on SS Marie in 1962.

For the sake of accuracy, it's Kirk Glezen anchoring the Newscene in this video. He had been at WATT Radio in Cadillac before heading south on the Mackinaw Trail to Tustin, and WWTV. I had replaced him a couple of years before this at MacDonald Broadcasting.

Stark stuff, but fun to see. I will always remember joshing Kirk at The Roaring 20's in downtown Cadillac, when L.C. Greenwood showed up in town on a tour to promote Lite Beer. I asked Greenwood some questions on tape, and when I walked back to Kirk, I offered, "I didn't know he was a poet." He bit, but only for a moment.

Thanks for posting this!

Great seeing old news clips. Just wish someone could upload the 50th Anniversary special. Might answer the "'9&10' or '7&4'" question. As I understand it, 7&4 has been "7&4" since at least the 70s.

I have the 50th from 7&4, I could try to put it up if that is what you are looking for.

Please do! I no longer live in northern Michigan and have been wanting to see it for years (I did, thankfully see the 9&10 50th).

According to Logopedia, this was one of 7&4's earliest logos:

That is from a TV Guide AD, I believe. Look at the colors used for background and font on the channel numbers. But I could be wrong
I also have the 50th from 7&4 somewhere in a giant box...

Ok Organman, I think I've got it uploaded to you tube. Not quite as crisp as my original DVD which was recorded direct to disc, no VHS tape, but still watchable. Enjoy!

EDIT: I just watched this video myself after not seeing it for almost 14 years. Wow. I,m happy to see again many of these people who are gone today. Having worked for Midwestern Broadcasting for 35 years I was proud to have been part of the operation.

What an awesome special! Very well-produced and it was nice seeing the late, great Dave Walker again. Too bad he's gone. As a matter of fact, Scott Michael Trager, who hosted 9&10's 50th is also gone as well. Two well-missed gentlemen.

Thanks, Mars! Much better quality than I recall on my VHS tape...lol

It's just unfortunate they didn't have logos previous to the TV 7&4 logo of the mid-late 70s.

When did you work for Midwestern Broadcasting?

Today I saw a promo for Chef Herman's cooking show. I like him and hadn't seen it in awhile so I thought I would tune in. The announcer said it's on weekdays at 5pm. I watched the whole hour, no Herman. So I backed up my TiVo and played the promo again. While the announcer is saying weekdays the graphics on the screen say Wednesdays. Nice work guys.

I plan on buying a VCR capture card soon and putting my partial recording of a 1996 9&10 Nightside Report on YouTube.
Well, a promise is a promise and I got the capture card. I also acquired a full newscast from 2001. Here's part one of The Nightside Report from 1996:

Thanks for posting! I was find the intros he most interesting. "The Nightside Report" is quite bland in comparison to "The Late News" of the 80s

No problem. I don't think much of these intros and other things because I'm not exactly critical of local TV stations. :D I know this is a 9&10 thread, but I've found a near-complete 7&4 newscast from the Newswatch days in 1993 featuring Jerry Meyer. I also plan on posting that soon.

Pre-"NewsChannel" days? I'm very intrigued!!! Can't wait to see it!

Well that video capture card is working good. Other than a little tickle at the bottom edge of the screen the picture looks great. Does the card have time correction? Very stable recording.
