Cable systems that do not carry all network affiliates from their home DMA

Post by mtburb » Mon Dec 03, 2018 9:41 pm

Another recreation of a thread lost to the crash which was luckily backed up on Radio Discussions.

Here's what I said in the first post of the original thread:
This thread, as the title says, is specifically about any cable system, even MATV ones that only serve one particular building, that does not carry all of the network affiliates (specifically the Big Four, PBS, The CW and My Network) from the television DMA in which the system is situated in.

An MATV system at a senior complex in Temperance, which is located in the Detroit DMA (as is all of Monroe County) despite being right next to Toledo, only carries WXYZ, WJBK and WKBD from Detroit. The remaining networks are only available from Toledo and even WJBK is carried alongside WUPW.

There is also the WOW headend in Perry, which is in Shiawassee County, the entirety of which is part of the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City DMA though it is much closer to Lansing. However, the only stations from that DMA that are carried on this system are WSMH and WAQP, the rest of the networks are all from the Lansing DMA.
The Temperance senior complex in question is Luther Haus.

Also, no changes have been made at either system since the original thread.

My furthest DTV tropo: KDKA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 202 miles for three days in January 2017 and a night in September 2017 with only an Antennas Direct C2V!

Current setup: Antennas Direct C2Max (2018-present)

Charter Spectrum systems in Sturgis and Coldwater (Grand Rapids DMA) don't carry WZZM or WGVU.

Charter Spectrum in Clare (Traverse City-Cadillac DMA [mostly]) doesn't carry WGTU, but carries all the Big Four from Flint-Saginaw and the other Big Four stations (and WXII-LP!!) from Traverse City-Cadillac.

Comcast in Holly was also counted as one such system between 2006 and 2011. In 2006, as it was connected to a headend in Flint, it had to drop WDIV in order to increase viewership for WEYI. In 2011, when Holly got it's own headened, WEYI was in turn dropped-to bring back WDIV.

Buckeye in Bedford, MI still doesn't carry WTVS despite that system adding both WWJ and WMYD in recent years. Kind of ironic in that WTVS is one of two stations from Detroit that could be carried fully in Toledo (CBET is the other). However, both of Toledo's PBS members (WGTE and WBGU [WBGU's only cable carriage in Michigan]) are carried in Bedford.

Buckeye's Sandusky, OH system is missing a few stations from its home market (Cleveland). WQHS, WMFD, WRLM, WNEO/WEAO, and WDLI (now a glorified subchannel of WVPX, which IS carried) aren't carried.

WMFD has very little cable coverage in the Cleveland DMA outside of its natural home area, though it does make it as far north as Wooster (Clear Picture, now apparently branded as MCTV, based on the name of co-owned Massillon Cable TV).

Meanwhile, Buckeye does carry CBET in Sandusky/Erie County, the farthest east it gets...though no other Detroit area stations make it onto that system for obvious reasons.

WDLI shows up on some nearby Spectrum(/Time Warner) systems. It made a big must carry push on Time Warner a few years ago...

Why don’t Cable Companies carry all local subs in any one market like for example Xfinity has Channel 20.2 Antenna TV but not 20.3 Escape just wondering what the reason is.

This thread does not count subchannel networks such as Antenna TV and Escape.

Obvious thread bump as this got brought up in another thread.

Comcast Xfinity in Sandusky is missing several stations from in-market Detroit (most notably WWJ), but it does have the Big Three from Flint/Saginaw. This system's lineup, overall, is straight out of 1990 -- it has only 40 channels and is also missing several major cable networks (including Cartoon Network), as well as any form of PBS (this system did carry WCMZ until that went defunct). Quite pathetic for a system serving the county seat of Sanilac County!

Kind of baffling that Sandusky doesn't have digital cable or high speed internet yet has a Walmart!

Though it isn’t true anymore, for years WBSX/WPXD was not carried in the eastern portion of the Detroit market, especially Macomb and St. Clair, due to the tower location, practically on the Jackson county line.
