WNWO (NBC 24 Toledo) on RF 23

Post by innate-in-you » Fri Nov 23, 2018 9:30 pm

WNWO is currently being seen on RF 23, carrying all four programs (NBC, Stadium, Comet and TBD). I believe this is transmitted from the WTVG tower, significantly below the top, based on a granted STA.

As I type this, the same is still being transmitted on RF 49 as well, from WNWO's own tower (WNWO has never transmitted DTV from the top of its tower. The analog 24 antenna remains there. Their plan is to eventually transmit on RF 23, with more power, from the top of their own tower- Ohio's tallest).

I am just shy of locking on to WNWO on UHF 23.... i bet it would lock if WUDT in Detroit moved already. Though, if they move back to their own tower and boost the power slightly.... :blink

WUDT's signal at my house is having a panic attack!

EDIT: The signal has been okay since about 11:50 this morning, there must have just been some tropo

I never could understand why WNWO had a non-spectacular HDTV signal with that giant tower, but I guess that it makes sense if they aren't transmitting HDTV RF from the top of their tower. Does a TV antenna have enough bandwidth to cover the first adjacent without much degradation? IOW, can WNWO throw RF from their old NTSC 24 antenna with HDTV on RF 23? I have seen their warnings all week that the cut-over will be at 10AM this Friday, November 30th. So, for now, where is the RF23 coming from and where is RF49? I saw the STA, but it was only 600' up or so, but not sure which signal that was for?

WNWO has just signed off their RF 49 signal in a less-than-stellar fashion...right in the middle of a commercial for a local vape shop.

My furthest DTV tropo: KDKA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 202 miles for three days in January 2017 and a night in September 2017 with only an Antennas Direct C2V!

Current setup: Antennas Direct C2Max (2018-present)

I did a Scan last night, and it confused the hell out of my TV when it showed me two wnwo, one on RF49 one on RF 23, but they both had a crappy signal rating of about 70 so I was surprised that the new signal doesn't have more power as indicated, or perhaps it is not yet at the top of the 24 Tower? Or a new transmitter with more power? Also during the scan I found out the channel 27 wbgu is gone from 27 and popped up down the dial near wnwo

i can't pick it up at all... probably co-channel interference from WUDT here...

It appears WNWO has at least temporarily lost a lot of it's over-the-air viewership north of Monroe. Granted, WNWO had already lost a lot of Wayne County viewers when NBC 24 was evicted from TCI in Gibraltar and Woodhaven in late 1997 because WDIV was allowed to do so as of 1996 (more specifically via the Cable Reform Act).

Going by the bounding contours on RabbitEars, the areas where WNWO's and WUDT's contours overlap extend along a line from just south of Essex, Ontario; to northeastern Freedom Township in rural Washtenaw County; and extends as far north as Canton, Wayne, Allen Park and Ecorse and as far south as the north side of Monroe proper.

Hoping 24 WNWO ups the power and/or antenna height, as I'm getting pixilation in Toledo since the jump from 49 to 23 when I only used to have it on very windy days. WGBU, wherever they moved are spot-on one day, then unable to decode the next day.
