WKAR HDradio has not transmitted for weeks. Another transmitter failure?

Yes. The main FM transmitter failed. We had to send a major component to Harris in Quincy for repair, it came back just in time for the High Voltage section of the transmitter to fail when we tried to re-start. We're looking at middle of next week for full restoration.

Good to hear it is coming back. Miss listening to classical in the afternoon.
Good Luck with the repair.

Well, we have the main analog transmitter working, and the HD transmitter, but so far only for 1 channel. We're still working on the -2 and -3 channels.

Saw it on HD with one channel the other day. Today see the HD transmitter is off again. Must be giving you problems again.

Question: what is HD radio? Do you need a special receiver to pick it up? Is the sound quality noticeably better than standard radio?

Yes you need an "HD Radio". HD Radio is a trademark name, not that it's high-definition.

The main core of HD is only 96k of digital bandwidth.

If that is divided into 3 then each HD only gets 32k each!

Certianly not High-Definition, even my phone can do much better than that!

Why doesn't WKAR and every other NPR-affiliated station out there just turn it off for good? Seriously -- who the heck listens to HD radio in your listening area other than a few hundred folks? Those funds could be better spent elsewhere.

NPR's boneheaded support of HD Radio is one example/reason as to why all public funding of NPR should cease.

The hideous electronic billboards in each end zone make Spartan Stadium look like a corny Arena Football League venue!

Thanks, I didn't know that HD radio is the trademarked name. I figured it was high definition radio, just like with the digital switch over for TV. So, I assumed that radio stations would have more bandwidth on the spectrum, enabling them to have sub-channels like you see with TV. It would seem like PBS/NPR and any other companies that have HD radio would want to develop some campaigns to educate the public on this technology.

This station broadcasts Classical Music 24/7 on the 2nd channel. The primary channel broadcasts Classical music all day until the afternoon when, for some reason, they broadcast NPR news. I can get NPR news ad nauseam on many other NPR stations in the area besides almost all the AM stations. Classical Music is a unique service to this area and makes WKAR stand out. Funds spent on NPR news are a waste and should be diverted to a better transmitter.

So, you know you are in trouble, when you call the manufacturer of the device, and say I have error codes XXXXXX and YYYYYY and they say, we don't know what those mean.
