The Great Burnout

This is not a surprise to anyone, except corporate managers who continue to run stations into the ground in the pursuit of saving extra pennies.

The MMJ (one man band) model where reporters shoot, write, edit… then post stories on websites. Social media… then do about 20 other jobs… is broke and forcing journalists who want to tell real stories out of the biz.

Automation systems have producers doing more… not just writing, but editing video, creating graphics, etc. got multiple newscasts.

And we’ve added on so many newscasts that directors go from one show right into the next… with very little help especially when someone gets sick or God forbid wants to take a vacation.

The job used to be fun. It isn’t anymore. And with people being asked to do more and salaries being kept low, stations can’t fill open positions… which adds additional stress to those who are trying their best to keep the lights on.

It’s ridiculous… and yet, despite a report out covering 1400 newsrooms, NOTHING will be done.

Go back to the future. Go back to just 6 & 11pm Daily newscasts. Reduce staff, but pay them really well to dig up real news stories.
