Now hiring the Captain of the Titanic

Post by sinklair » Mon May 22, 2023 6:49 am

After laying off most of its staff, shutting down morning and weekend news, driving morale into the ground, who wouldn’t want to be Vice President and General Manager for WEYI-WSMH-WBSF???

One suggestion to improve the job posting… “Anyone hoping to be successful need not apply.”

I don't get how they are legally allowed and/or own so many stations in a single DMA.

MikeBear: they are using so-called sidecar deals. Sinclair technically only owns WAMH FOX 66. Armstrong Williams owns Howard Stirk Holdings, which operates WEYI NBC 25. Cunningham Broadcasting operates WBSF CW 46. Both Cunningham and Howard Stirk Holdings have management deals with Sinclair.

They are supposed to be separate stations. In reality, everything is run by Sinclair. There’s only one newsroom, one studio, one sales team. Sinclair is able to get away with it because the FCC has ignored its oversight responsibilities… at least for now.

Other station groups like Nexstar have similar sidecar deals with Mission Broadcasting (the new potential owner of WADL in Detroit.)
