WGVU TV and Radio interruption

Post by Feature/writer » Tue Apr 30, 2024 9:04 am

This email went out shortly before 9am on Tues. 4/30
We regret to inform you that our broadcast signal for both WGVU TV and FM in the greater Grand Rapids area is currently experiencing an interruption due to a cut fiber optic line that feeds our signals. We are actively working to resolve this issue with our service providers and hope to restore the broadcast signal as soon as possible.
In the meantime, we want to assure you that you can still enjoy WGVU programming through alternative platforms:

TV Online Streaming: Access our content conveniently via our website at www.wgvu.org or the PBS Video app.

WGVU FM Streaming: Access our content conveniently via our website at www.wgvunews.org or the WGVU app.

Last I knew, that fiber optic cable also carried the signals for the computer labs downtown to the server farm and mainframe in Manitou Hall on the Allendale campus.

The outage Tuesday morning (April 30) was under 3 hours, per what WOOD TV surmised from Facebook posts: https://www.woodtv.com/news/grand-rapid ... f-the-air/

My TV Live Bandscan history shows it in red, as apparently there was undecodable content (or no content) being sent:

The fiber optic cable cut was due to an on campus construction project. It was between Manitou Hall and the Transmitter facility on Campus. Only WGVU was impacted. Full Restoration was completed by 6pm.
