Metro Detroit CB

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Glad some of you hear people.
I bought a very old CB handheld at a flea market a few years ago. It came with about a foot long rubber duckie with a BNC.
I put the rubber duckie on a Shack Pro-96 scanner and scanned 11 meters for about 4 days. Never heard a peep.
This was inside the house, so conditions may vary I suppose.

You don't have to run illegal power to talk a long way on CB, depending on the sunspot cycle. I once talked from Flint to Tennessee on a 100mW walkie-talkie, that was in 1975.

In the early 90's, I had an old Pierce-Simpson tube CB (Guardian 23) on a Starduster ground plane up 50 foot. I regularly talked from Flint to Sheppard and Oil City on 5 watts, and also talked to Vernazza, Italy for ten minutes, on the same setup.

I had a Starduster back in the 70's, must have been a good sunspot cycle, I talked to Vancouver, Texas, and Florida off of it completely barefoot. I had the same luck with a Maco V-5/8 in the late 90's/early 2000's. I still have radios in all my vehicles, and am putting a tower up in the Spring. One way of communicating that doesn't pass through any "computers" monitoring communications.

HD74, you have a point there. I still only have an old Cobra 29 AM mobile. It still worked as of a year ago, about 4.7W DC into a 50 ohm dummy load, swinging to just under 7 watts with modulation. I've been really tossing around the idea of picking up an old base CB with SSB, just for the halibut. I usually run my Grundig Sat800 through 11 meters, and hardly hear anything.

One thing I can say about CB, it can travel quite well compared to GMRS at the same power level. My 5 watt GMRS portables struggle to make it a mile clearly in an urban environment. Yeah, it'll go 70 miles from mountaintop to mountaintop, but that's not gonna happen in SEMI!

I almost bought an old DAK base a few years back for $100 at Goodwill. Not sure why I passed, but I went back and someone else grabbed it. it was a very shiny rackmount case with a row of large meters on the upper front panel. Had a D104 mic with it too. I think I literally kicked myself after I saw what they were going for online! I still want one though, or an old Browning or Siltronix 1011D.

FWIW, we are just ending the last solar cycle (#24) and about to begin #25, which is expected to peak around 2024 or so. Right now, we are in the weakest part of the overall weakest cycle in decades. That said, day to day peaks and lows are the rule of thumb for the next couple years, meaning conditions may be great one day and plain awful the next.

Does WWV still have propagation formats? Are those the same coding? Could be voice now once an hour, different code.

Never head it stronger than N7, or less than 4, have to look up the disturbed letter. _. _ _... but not now!

I've been hunting around for an older 40-channel SSB rig for cheap. I saw a decent Cobra 142, but it got past what I was willing to bid for it.

You just missed the Toledo Swap this past weekend. You can always find CB's at a ham swap for $10-20 bucks.
The GM Club's swap is on April 7th starting at 8am. It's at the same place most of the swaps around here have been lately.

I converted one to 6 meters 25 years ago.

Thank you for this info. How often do they have swaps there?

Hello. Sorry for the late reply. I finally remembered my password.
They have swaps there about 4 times a year.

There is a swap this Sunday, December 1st there. I believe it is the L'Anse Creuse Amateur Radio Club's swap.
The Hazel Park club will have a swap there on January 19th.

I'll probably skip both of those and save my money for the Livonia swap on February 23rd. Quite a bit larger than any of the swaps that use that hall in Madison Heights. The Livonia swap is at a new place this year:
Monaghan Banquet Hall Knights of Columbus
19801 Farmington Road
Livonia, MI 48150

You'll have to hit up the LCARC, HPARC or GMARC swaps.
The Livonia club has announced to its members that it's had to cancel the February 23 event. Problems arose dealing with the site's management.

Thanks for the heads up. I can't make LCARC this Sunday.
But I'm thinking Livonia cancelling will drive up attendance for the Hazel Park swap. Looks like I'll be hitting that one.
