Funny you should mention WGRY (1590 Grayling, not 1370 Gary). A couple of weeks ago, I called John DeGroot down in Florida to see if he had any extra copies of "Living On Air", his Father Don's Autobiography, to sell. He didn't, and the only ones online were kind of beat up, missing covers, etc. So I had it sent from another Library. I speed read a borrowed copy close to 40 years ago, but really didn't read it thoroughly then, as I had to return it to his family quickly. I went to the Library this evening to pick it up. The recent consensus is that it is an excellent book about Michigan radio, with a lot of similarities to John Landecker's "Records Truly Is My Middle Name", but centered in Flint and Detroit rather than Ann Arbor and Chicago, and like Peter Cavanaugh's "Local DJ", but without the gratuitous profanity, which may be more realistic, but in an excess that distracts and shocks. Don D's book also covers an era a generation earlier than John L. and Peter C. do. But there are plenty of names mentioned that I recognize, and quite a few I knew well or met. All cover a lot of personal and family stories in various amounts. All worked in Flint Radio at some point in their careers.

One Night when WCBY 1240 and WGRY 1230 were both Adult Standards, I heard the same programming on both channels back then in SE MI. I assume that it was WCBY and WGRY, as the Format was the same. They were also on about the same frequency and geographic area.

It just occurred to me that Jim McCluskey probably was planning to use the CHYR Method for WJCO/WDJD/WJKN to be Fulltime, like WNZK 690/680, but they granted that on the condition that it was a one time only grant, not to be repeated. He was most likely considering 1510/1520. No doubt he had talked to a consultant who thought it could be repeated or waived.

Questions For Rich

Post by CK-722 » Thu Jan 10, 2019 12:26 pm

Was the WKNX 1210 transmitter actually at 221 S. Washington in Saginaw, as shown on the History Card? Was it on top of a building? What was the counterpoise like? It wasn't a T antenna, was it? Or was it a tower on the ground? Did they put a short tower on 1650 Bradley/Treanor just for the Auxiliary when they moved the Main TL to Gabel Rd.? History can be confusing! Like that the WKNX History Card is linked to WJNL Kingsley.

"No doubt he had talked to a consultant who thought it could be repeated or waived."
Or he just pulled it out of his ass.
FCC rules meant nothing to that guy, one of the true bottom feeders of the radio industry.
