WWMT files to increase TX height by nearly 200 feet

Post by MWmetalhead » Sun Apr 15, 2018 10:04 am

On November 29, WWMT quietly filed an application to raise its antenna height by 60 meters (197 feet).

A CP has not yet been issued, to the best of my knowledge.

If approved, this should help with reception issues in Kent & Ottawa Counties.

Also, WOTV has filed to move to RF 17 and increase power from 255 kW to 325 kW. If approved, this would cause two WXMI translators to be disclocated - one in Muskegon, another in Battle Creek.

These changes are all part of the FCC repack caused by the Spectrum Auction. Stations all over the country are being changed by the FCC. Some stations are asking for additional power or other minor changes during the repack.

This is good news. Ch 3 has always been limited by the weak signal of the Ch 8 antenna on the east side of the tower. This puts the signal back on top, where it belongs. Interesting in that Sinclair bought Dielectric (the antenna manufacturer) out of bankruptcy, just so they could have a source of antennas.

Quite a few years ago, when Ch3 knew they were going to CH 8 RF, the chief engineers of CH3 and ch 8 talked to each other to have CH8 transmit CH3's digital content on CH8's antenna, which sat on top of the CH7 antenna at CH8's site. CH8's then owners nixed the idea.

tvbobn, the antenna project for CH3 is not from the TV repack. WWMT is on CH8 RF, and they are staying there. They simply didn't have the money, or did want to spend the money for antenna before the owner change. They are putting up an antenna they need. Interesting in that Sinclair owns Dielectric the antenna manufacturer. Among the full power stations, Ch3,8 13, ch35, 52 and 17 and WTLJ stay on their existing RF channels. WOTV goes from ch 20 to 17, WZPX goes from 44 to 21, and WLLA goes from 45 to 22. Of the eight translators, or LPTV's, 4 stay, and 4 change.

Thanks for the info.

Not many changes in Grand Rapids market. Some places, almost every station has to change!
