Free Beer and Hot Wings - One Year After Zane

Post by Biff » Thu Feb 16, 2017 8:08 am

During commercial breaks I have been tuning over to the FBHW show. It has been my opinion that the show has been on a steady decline since the large syndication but that is to be expected when the priority has to be appeasing advertisers. The show has to lose a little edge. Enter the reliance on "the usual source" and an endless barrage of play-by-play of YouTube videos. "Well, you can't see it but here is what is happening.....". *snooze*

That said, while Eric was on the show, the show still had some bite. There was still the wild card factor and they had a guy who was able to make observations about the videos they were watching or stories they shared. He always had the magic paint brush. That magic paint brush is gone and now the show is just a coloring book with the dollar store crayons.

FB and HW are 40-somethings with kids. Their lives are boring. It happens to all of us. The difference between the show then and now was Eric had the ability to turn something mundane into something interesting even when he had small kids. FB and HW do not have that ability. Their stories are boring. Their vocal tones are boring. They sound bored.

What's the solution? Bring in the youth. Well, here comes the next problem: Joe in doses is great. Joe all the time is obnoxious and unfunny. He spends a lot of time with the fake laugh and laughing at his own input in order to try to incite the rest of the room into laughter. They laugh occasionally. It's not far from a Bob and Tom laugh.

So let's bring in MORE youth. Justin (or is it Josh?). He's rarely heard from and seems to be just filling a chair. Maybe he's great but it seems like he's the Jason Newstead on And Justice For All sacrificial lamb.

Steve? The only person on earth that is more boring that Hot Wings.

The show used to be so great but I am convinced that they need Eric more than Eric needs them. The helium has been mostly let out of their balloon and it's now floating around the house wandering aimlessly whenever the heat vents blow some air on it. Anyone who has kids has seen this balloon.
Happy trees and happy clouds.

You can't use that excuse for everything...

I would have to agree. Fbhw are not near as good as they were with Eric Zane. I realized a long time ago that Zane was the only reason I listened... when he was gone I would always switch it. Now I haven't listened to them in a year. I do with Zane had a better co host though... Zane private massage me, give me a shot!

Spot on. The "Joe show" is old very fast. I'm switching between Zane and 1340 AM for politics on my 45 minute commute daily. FBHW loosing ground quickly

If you're going to slap "loosing ground," Audiophile, you can't let "private massage me" go...

I hope FB&HW and Zane reunite some day.

I will say this - if Tony Gates ever retires, I think Eric Zane would be a phenomenal choice to succeed him. I think he and Michelle would sound great together.
C'mon iHeartRadio - do the RIGHT thing for once! Please cancel "Rover's Morning Glory" from WBFX in Grand Rapids.

I like the "if" in there ... it feels like Gates will never leave.

Agree completely. LAV would seems like a better fit for Zane, and maybe that's part of the thinking, getting EZ under their umbrella for that day.

Stranger things have happened. The mere fact that HW tried to screw Eric over would be a difficult hurdle to overcome.

As to LAV, I wouldn't wish being partnered with Big Mouth Michelle on my worst enemy. That woman is incapable of ever shutting her humongous piehole. I think her constant interruptions and incessant need to fill any space with her yappity-yap-yap would be something that would spur Gates to retire.

Tuned in today for Dan Patrick forgetting WBBL pre-empts the first hour for Zane.

I heard what sounded like a regular 10 minute segment of Simonson and Zane yukking it up about how Simonson had mis-pronounced a football player's name which degenerated into names of black porn stars then black player names to Simonson saying something regarding what would happen if you had "white kids from Coopersville".

Great content if the target demo is the Bubba 30-death demo.

Then Zane talked about being on Simonson's show. Seems like WBBL has built 10 mnute segments of each pimping the other show for at least an hour of content every week.

Gave Zane a shot but he needs a partner and Simonson isn't a candidate.

Eric DOES have two sidekicks / partners - OJ and Ben.

You apparently didn't listen long enough....

I listened to the "best of FBHW" this morning. They need to change the name to Bored and Boring. They spent five minutes talking about how to teach kids to set an appointment and be on time. I was waiting for them to explain how to properly tell kids to stay off the lawn. And then they delved into the oh-so-interesting topic of how to tie shoes. Wow! Riveting!

If this was just a random tune in during the week, I could see them using some filler material. But this makes "best of"?

Big mistake getting rid of Eric Zane because it only reveals how he carried that show.

I can't say I disagree with much on here, basically when you keep FB and HW and simply swap out Zane for Joe, you realize this show, like so many others, has some holes. I still really appreciate the two (FB/HW) but w/o the edge that EZ brought, it's not the same. And the same goes for his show, without the two being the steady, predictable guys, he's unable to be his true self, which is edgy.

GRD's ratings are currently at their lowest level in about 10 years, if not more. Station is not being programmed well. Too bland; not enough listener engagement.

Loudwire Nights is just awful. Hard Drive is 100x better.

Is he allowed to? In my original post I referred to him as possibly being the "Jason Newstead of Metallica during the And Justice For All" era.
