Michigan Jobs are Boring

Post by TC Talks » Mon May 13, 2024 9:27 pm

I tend to agree. Both my kids left the state because neither is interested in computer or tech jobs, and their skills reach beyond being a tactician.

CS jobs in Michigan pay about 2/3's of what is available elsewhere.
Michigan’s “hot jobs” list includes plenty of good-paying careers: logistics, industrial mechanics, medical specialists, software developers.

Alas, “hot jobs” may well be among those workers find the most boring, researchers from Michigan State University found in a new study that exposes large gaps between U.S. job openings and workers’ interests.

For Michigan, the research may offer some insight into how to combat deep and persistent worker shortages.

The research takes a worker-centered glimpse into the “labor market where employers are continually complaining that there aren’t enough people with the right skills to fill the available jobs,” Kevin Hoff, lead researcher on the study and associate professor of industrial psychology at MSU, told Bridge Michigan.

Take art. Nearly two-thirds of workers are attracted to jobs they consider artistic, social or enterprising. Trouble is, they comprise only 2% of openings, Hoff found.

Nearly half of job openings

are in fields many workers consider dull or “conventional,” like information technology and working with data and math, and the “realistic” jobs, where workers are dealing with their hands, tools and machines, such as the skilled trades.

The study, published last week in the Journal of Business and Psychology, is the first to look at labor gaps using career interests instead of skills or knowledge, MSU said.

Lay on an Amtrak train track - that will transport you straight to Russia.

That might be true, however Cost of living in Michigan is well below that of California Bay Area, Seattle, or New York.

And the quality of live is much better too. Guess what, so are the wages. Southeast Michigan is not a great place when compared to the other options out there.

Most of those tech jobs are in the SF area. SF has become hell on Earth. If you want to work in LA or anywhere near LA, be prepared for horrifying overpopulation. The Fresno-Sacramento area sucks. The beautiful parts of California are basically the rural regions where the only jobs available involve picking food.

Suggestion: Work really hard in whatever industry you are in. Work so hard that your employer is basically taking advantage of you. Work in several different jobs and become the best at them all. Then quit. Start your own business. Find a few reliable people and treat them well. Scale accordingly.

You can do this from anywhere nowadays for most jobs. Then you don't have to worry about cost of living, you can vacation wherever you like, and enjoy life. Working for anyone else past the age of 35 is a bad, bad idea.

What I know about Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield makes me happy to live in Toledo instead.

The parts of America that have actual opportunity like southern California are now ridiculously expensive and overcrowded and the rest is a bombed out, pilled out wasteland.

I guess one good thing about higher education becoming ridiculously expensive is that the "oh, you can get a BA in 19th century French art history and the rest will take care of itself" zeitgeist of the 90s is gone. At least flipping burgers doesn't put you five figures in debt for nothing.

The "valley" areas of California get brutally hot in the summer. Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield all qualify. The latter two are particularly bad if you don't like heat.

The only place in California I would live is the central coast... Monterey, Seaside, Carmel, etc. The late Earl Dickinson (WWJ) always advised me against it. "Too much fog" he said. Still a beautiful area.

The Central Coast in California is awesome... San Diego is fantastic... the area north of the Golden Gate Bridge between SF and Santa Rosa (including Napa Valley) is incredible. There's lots of places in California where I'd easily live but you gotta be close to the ocean or away from the LA County madness.
