WLLZ 500

Post by szmigiel » Thu May 23, 2019 5:14 pm

So WLLZ is going to do 500 song Memorial Weekend starting tomorrow at noon. I submitted my 5 songs, but since they are early 80s deep cuts, I wonder if any of them will even make the bottom 50.

All I know is I will be listen to hear what they play and keeping on eye on the Recently played list all Memorial Weekend long, so the gimmick is working on me.

Nice to see some variety back on radio again. Aside from the latest "Top 223 Seger songs" on CSX, there hasn't really been much in the way of programming like this of late. For certain there will be the usual warhorses, but 500 songs? Sheesh...the average playlist is, what, 200-250 songs anyway? This should be good.

How many of those 223 Seger Songs are deep 60s tracks, like "East Side Story", "Persecution Smith", and "Heavy Music"? "East Side Story" is a DEEP, deep tear jerker, and his first bona fide Local/Regional Chart Hit.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

If there was audio of Seger ordering pizza, you can bet it would be song 224.

CK-722,only folk my age (I'm 44 days from my 66th birthday ) remember "Jonah," Lucifer, " " East Side Story," " Persecution Smith," "Heavy Music " and Seger's other "Boppin' Bobby" Last Herd and Bob Seger System hits. After about '75, Seger tried to capture to nascent "Yuppie" market, and din all the way in '80 with his "Against The Wind" album which contained "The Horizontal Bop," " Her Strut," and the title cut, which was about Seger's aging from late teenager to his mid-30's.

WCSX actually did feature "Heavy Music" on their standard playlist in the 90s. I think many listeners just lost interest in it or it didnt resonate with them like the later stuff.

Y.M. Ionhere, most listeners are likely Millenials who were born about a generation after "Heavy Music" hit.

I doubt the songs other than the top 30 or 40 are being played in any particular order.

The logo displayed at the start of that video is the one the present day WLLZ should be using!

The so-called "variety" on 106.7 Fake Wheels is pitiful (no surprise) when stacked up against the tracks played on the real WLLZ in that video.

It must've been shortly after March 1994 that WLLZ became "Today's Wheels."

I like the Paul Turner voiceovers; his present day work sounds nowhere nearly as good unfortunately.

I also like how the 106.7 Fake Wheels web site says Bill McAllister is on the air right now...even though he isn't on the air right now! (The Drew & Mike podcast is.)

Nice work paying attention to detail, fellas. :hat

I'll admit, I guess I expected tracks like that on this countdown. But, rock radio was different in 1994. There wasn't as much music to go around, those tracks weren't quite as old, and it's my understanding that this Top 1000 was a way to "retire" certain songs and bands. It was shortly thereafter that formatics changed further. I'm sure Flagg can help us out with that.

I just heard Jane's Addiction's Jane Says on WLLZ. I don't think I've heard that song on any kind of rock station, (well stations that go beyond alt rock like WCSX or WRIF.)
