La Nueva Playa 93.5 Detroit

Post by Steve79 » Wed Jan 24, 2024 3:48 pm

On my drive home scanning the radio I noticed that beasley has flipped the Podcast US programing on 93.5 to rebroadcast 105.1 HD2. I knew this would happen eventually. Not sure how long this will last as it's what the 3rd format on this translator? I'm not sure about 99.1 as I can't get it here with CJAM on that frequency.
I actually like this format over sports and that podcast crap.

Most SW Detroit Latinos are of Mexican origin.

Beasley is so damn clueless they don't realize this format mostly appeals to Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, which are extremely few in number in SE Michigan.

I cannot pick up 93.5 here, but I can tell you 99.1 is still airing the podcast format. 98.3 & 99.9 are still airing black gospel programming from Urban One.

Fifth format, I think. The first was K-Love, then Praise Network, then The Roar, then Podcast and now Playa. Unless I'm missing something.
Salsa music is actually more popular in Mexico than many people realize. Its audience is primarily in the bigger cities, however, and I would assume most Spanish-dominant Mexicans in the Detroit area come from the northern states where what we typically think of as "regional Mexican" music is most popular. That's why it still seems baffling that Detroit was one of the rollout markets for this brand. Detroit is not New York City. Also, the younger demos a format like Playa targets are not only listening to radio less than older generations, they're less Spanish dominant and I would imagine listen more to English language hip-hop than to music in Spanish.

Reggaeton would've been a better format choice than Salsa.
