Bally Sports May Lose TV Rights to MLB Next Week
Re: Bally Sports May Lose TV Rights to MLB Next Week
Diamond Sports & Charter Spectrum reached a new deal from reading the article, it looks like Bally's naming rights will be ending on the RSN.
Go Pistons, Let's Go Redwings.

Looks like some kind of experiment with OTA and streaming possibly leaving the cable channel behind in the near future. No word if there are plans to do the same with Tigers games.
Will Broadcast’s Local Sports Comeback Stand Up?
"The implosion of the regional sports network business has allowed local broadcasters to step into the breach with live local pro-sports telecasts. The question now is: Can stations keep and even grow their sports stature, or will they get stuck on the bench once direct-to-consumer operations hit their stride?"

In my area Xfinity is dropping Bally Sports and lowering our bills accordingly.

Some of the regional sports fee must be attributable to the Big Ten Network, as only an $8 to $10 bill reduction is being granted to Michigan subscribers. As I recall, the regional sports fee on my bill when I subscribed to Comcast was closer to $15 a month.
Bally's wants $19.95 a month for streaming app subscriptions these days. I suspect they want a several dollar per subscriber fee increase from Comcast (probably ~$5 per sub). Presumably, Bally's would argue they want the same price they'd earn from a new streaming sub, minus server costs. I am not familiar enough with streaming technology to understand what the scalability economics look like, though.

Scales nicely when you use a decent content delivery network. Scales horribly when you try to roll your own as no one is going to be able to replicate what Netflix did a decade ago.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 8:39 pmI am not familiar enough with streaming technology to understand what the scalability economics look like, though.
Fastly is the choice these days, the more you use the bigger the discounts. Anything Google is not.
