Detroit Nielsen numbers for radio - January 2023
Big gains for WCSX, WYCD, WKQI and WRIF. Best book for YCD in eons. They are playing less hip-hop country and a wider selection of library tracks (or at least a different selection) lately. I'm glad to see the numbers are responding positively.
WLLZ, WDVD and WUOM saw nice boosts, too.
WDZH and WDRQ seem stuck in neutral. Too much repetition is hurting both stations, in my opinion.

Maybe the reason that WOMC dropped is because the song library seems to have gotten even smaller since the holidays? I’d be amazed if the library was much over 200 these days.

Fuck you WLLZ.
Re: Detroit Nielsen numbers for radio - January 2023
Looks like a couple stations might have a "meter." Loyal listeners can cause a pop even without a big cume jump. WLLZ and WDVD didn't seem to attract a lot of new ears even with a decent bump.
WDVD now trailing WCSX in total listeners. That would have been unheard of prepandemic. You would think Grammy season would benefit 95.5 and 96.3 quite a bit too.

I don’t even recall seeing numbers this high for 95.5 during PPM- even before the Amp era.

95.5 is playing a lot of throwback songs in its playlist of late. Big hits one might expect to hear on 105.1.
I think Screamin' Scott's arrival at CSX is a big boost for them. I'm unsure how many weeks in January he covered at CSX, though.
I agree that there's not enough artist variety and too much song repetition at 104.3. With after effects of Christmastime listening habits still influencing January numbers to a degree, it's too soon to say if low 5s at 104.3 will be the new normal. I'm sure management is far more focused on 25 to 54 and especially 35 to 54 share. If those shares can be enhanced at the expense of 6+ share, I'm sure management will accept that trade-off all day long.

6+ numbers are mostly irrelevant to stations like WDVD and WCSX. That said, WDVD's cume jumped 52,000 in the recent numbers. They trail WCSX by 10,000. I suspect WCSX has much better TSL than WDVD.RadioRat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 22, 2023 10:38 pmLooks like a couple stations might have a "meter." Loyal listeners can cause a pop even without a big cume jump. And no one gives a fuck about the Grammys
And yes, one meter can make a H*** difference. That may be the case with WYCD as well. The sample is ridiculously small.

We should all remember the short lived 7.9 share WJLB enjoyed at one point last year. That's a great example of what armchair pd is mentioning.

I cant decide witch I hate more:
1.) WLLZ's decision makers that first claimed to be "A New Generation of Classic Rock" and proceeded to play the same worn out stuff we've all heard a million times.
2.) WLLZ's pivot to basically a clone of WCSX when their initial incarnation wasnt working so well (because the playlist sucked).
3.) The fact that Detroit listeners now seem to be rewarding them with better ratings.
We deserve the shit radio we have. Fuck you WLLZ.

Re: Detroit Nielsen numbers for radio - January 2023
I didn't think WNIC would maintain it's number one position after Christmas. I noticed that its share was 7.7% after
returning to their A/C format which was about half of an audience drop from 15.7% with Christmas music. Even with losing
about half of its audience WNIC still remains the number one station in Detroit. I was happy to see classic rock WCSX had
jumped up to number two with an increase of a 7.3% share. WCSX is so much better than their competition WLLZ that
only got a 3.8% share. I believe WCSX will continue dominating WLLZ for the classic rock audience in Detroit. I still say that
Beasley with classic rocker WCSX and active rocker WRIF is the only radio company in Detroit that understands Detroit's
rock audience and heritage. WRIF came in number five and is trending upward. I don't think the other commercial radio
big companies understand "real rock" meaning both classic rock and active rock.
Other observations that are worth mentioning include how Urban Adult Contemporary station WMXD dropped to
number 11 with only a 4.4% share and classic hits WOMC is now number 7 with a 4.6% share. What I thought seemed
interesting was that WYCD jumped up to number 6 with a 5.1% share. Although I don't like most of the major record
labels modern country hits I do think that WYCD gives a more professional impression as compared to their Cumulus
competition with WDRQ that continues to remain a bottom feeder. WDRQ was number 18 with a 1.9% share. WDRQ
reminds me of what Cumulus in Grand Rapids continues to do with "Thunder Country" and that is just continue in
a losing effort which is insanity. I believe WDRQ should flip to either classic country, diversified country, or perhaps to
a non country format that offers the Detroit area something different than WDRQ playing what WYCD plays.

Would WJR 93.1 FM with local news twice an hour during the weekday mornings and afternoons work? (Talk shows would still be aired)

Depends on the programming. With the programming as-is, I think an FM simulcast would provide the brand only a minor boost.
WJR has a brand perception of being old and waspy. I don't see how being available on FM alone would change that perception. Most of WJR's loyal advertisers don't seem bothered by the fact it is an AM station. Many of their advertisers are local companies who advertise only on WJR.

90's rap on classic hits stations? Usually, they stick with pop and rock.stopnswop2 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 10:45 pmOr the weird segue I just heard.
