I have a reel-to-reel tape of JP McCarthy's "New Years night" countdown on WJR from Dec 31, 1969.
I don't recall exactly how long it is, but it's several hours. He rotates between playing songs and then interviewing the various singers between the songs. Don't know if he did it live or was pre-recorded, but several of the interviews he asked the folks what they're doing for the evening and just a little more light banter. Each one is fairly short, just filling the gaps between songs.
Think I might play it on the evening of Dec 31, seeing that it will be exactly 50 years since it was recorded.
Thinking about streaming it or converting to an MP3. Anybody interested?
Acceptable registrations in the queue through June 3 at 5:00p ET have now been activated. Enjoy! -M.W.

I have one of Dick Purtan's from the 60s or early 70s.
I just connect the audio to a laptop and record to an MP3. If you want to upload to youtube, you have to make it a video. Could be just simple slide with the audio information attached. I use lightscribe to edit video, but any video editor could do it.
Re: 50 year anniversary New Years tape
I think that you have to edit the music down to a few seconds in and out to avoid copyright static from YouTube, then you can post it.
Re: 50 year anniversary New Years tape
I would love to hear it.

Took a bit to find this old thread and I almost forgot about this "project"!
I took the tape and broke it down to three recordings and uploaded them in a podcast format. You can either listen to them or download them. They are all mono (as was all AM radio back then). These were recorded on an ALLIED reel-to-reel recorder but played back on a restored AMPEX so I could digitize them. I'm sure it'll bring back some memories with the old songs and the interviews:

This is a great tape..J.P. was at the top of his game. It only underscores how far the "Great Voice of the Great Lakes" has fallen....now only an extremist shell of its former broadcasting excellence.
