New Rock 89X

Post by That_Canadian_Guy » Wed May 30, 2018 7:49 pm

Looks as though 89X got a new logo and dropped the word "Alternative". Smart move. Sounds like they have flipped to Active Rock. I heard Ghost, Five Finger Death Punch and even Sevendust earlier. I like the imaging as well. This is the best the station has sounded in a very long time.

That kind of sounds like WRIF. (Maybe I'm wrong though. I've been listening to classic rock so long that my perception of anything after 1995 is kind of skewed and warped.)

If they finally did something in that direction it was a smart move.

Hell its really a no brainer I posted this kind a format on here 2 yrs ago as theyre Det ratings were tanking.I called it Hard Alt without the hair metal.

Windsor/Det loves theyre heavy rock thats for sure.

Next I would go music intensive in the morn drive, have a street presence get out and push the station.

I would go from the old boring" new rock "moniker to........... Xtreme Rock 89X

Finally something to get Xcited about on the boring Det dial...........

How overused is the term Xtreme or Extreme at this point?

I agree with Riggs.

The term "Xtreme" screams late 90's / early 00's rap rock and alt metal. It's outdated.

I like the new logo. Next, they should find a new voiceover artist. Sick of hearing the Dogs 101 narrator from Animal Planet read 89X's liners. He's been the station's primary imaging voice for over 20 years. FIND SOMEONE NEW PLEASE!

I hope the station continues to evolve. They are moving in the right direction but still have plenty of room to improve. Wish they would improve the audio chain. So sick of having to adjust the volume knob every time I turn on 88.7; their processing is too damn quiet for a rock station.

They are finally moving in the right direction. Being used to WXKR and WIOT in Toledo it's nice to finally hear hard rock without 2 out of every 3 songs being 80's butt rock.

Is "80's Butt Rock" and "Hair Metal" the same thing?

(slight postscript. I remember an episode of That Metal Show where Eddie Trunk was castigating people for using the term "Hair Metal." I thought "that's kind of like a girl who shaves her head and yells at people for staring at her.")

Personally, I usually use the term "Butt Rock" to describe arena rock. Examples: Journey, Billy Squier, Styx, Queen, Boston, Yes, Scorpions, Great White, Whitesnake, Poison, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Boston, Kiss.

I hate every artist on the above list except Def Leppard.

Both arena rock and hair metal suck. A handful of bands fall into both categories. However, of the two sub-genres, I by far hate arena rock more.

Popular theory suggests the term "butt rock" originated from a liner used by many rock radio stations during the late 80's to early 90's: "Rock...and nothing but rock!" Would not surprise me if stations such as 103.5 The Blaze in Chicago used that line. That station was the worst of both worlds - tons of arena rock + tons of hair metal.

ha ha I think I first heard The Term from you MW. 89x Sounds better then they have in many years, but as said they need a new voice over guy. At least this can be heard in NW Ohio, WIOT and WXKR suck.

I-Heart Media, I ask you to please bring back 106.7 The D, but without Journey,Eddie money, or Styx. ALT 106.7 sucks ass!

I've personally always used "butt rock" and "hair metal" interchangeably, but Toledo radio plays far too much of both the Journey/REO/Squier crap and the Poison/Bon Jovi/Def Leppard crap.

And yeah, the Blaze in Chicago did suck. Evergreen flipping it to Rock 103.5 (which started as mainstream rock but eventually evolved to active) in 1994 was a H*** upgrade.

I was flipping between 89x and Alt 106.7 last night. The winner in my opinion : 89x
The also continue to say "Windsor-Detroit" like they have for years so they might end up beating yet another competitor.

How do I stream this station with an app? I understand that I could stream with a mobile browser. They are a part of iHeart radio, but you have to be in Canada to stream with the app. It doesn't come up in the iHeart app search or Detroit radio listings. Other radio apps aren't able to stream the station either. Seems like they are losing out on some listeners with this issue.

I'm unable to easily stream the Canadian stations. I had to download an app on my iPhone/iPad called "Radio Box". This allows me to stream the Canadians that I used to be able to stream on TuneIn, iHeart, etc.

I've tried a few apps and a couple of them list the station, but give an error that the station can't be streamed. I'll try Radio Box.
